In Star Wars : Return of the Jedi, Leia tells Luke that she has memories of her mother when she was young and that she is really beautiful, calm but sad. Luke says he never knew his mother. But in Star Wars : Revenge of the Sith, Padme Amidala (Luke and Leia's mother) dies instantly after giving birth to Luke and Leia. How can Leia have memories of her mother as she died after childbirth

Despite the nonsense said in the other answers this is NOT a "common plot hole that they hope you will overlook" and the memories of Leia are NOT of her stepmother. It was however a HUGE issue in the SW fan base ... one that cause Lucas to do something he had never done before ... explain it.

When it was first "leaked" that Padme would die at the end of ep III SW fans went nuclear over it. Fan boards all over the net lit up like X-mas trees with the rage of the fans for the very reason you point to ... Leia said she had memories of her mother. I was moderating several boards at the time and it was beyond wild. The explanation by Lucas was, surprisingly, quite good and was accepted by the fans who remembered that it was George's story to tell and not there's. The fans who still think they should be the ones telling the story of SW really need to grow up someday. Anyways ... the explanation is as follows and has to do with "Jedi Twins", & the fact that they were the children of the "Chosen One". The birth of Jedi Twins was actually rare in the time period of the Jedi order but when it happened both were usually very powerful in the Force but one of them tended to be more of the "warrior" mold while the other was more of the "diplomat" mold. With Luke & Leia it is clear to see that Luke was the "warrior" and that Leia was the "diplomat". This tied in with the "memories" that Leia had and with the fact that both Luke & Leia were immensely powerful in the Force. Leia's memories of her mother were Force generated due to her "diplomat" personality ... that's why Luke didn't have them. It also had something to do with the fact that Leia was born last and therefore was the last to have "contact" with their mother.

Granted this "explanation" is in the "out there" category ... it is however what Lucas said on the subject ... in that respect it only matters that it makes sense to him ... typical Lucas mind frame.

Leia was most likely aimed to be talking of her step mother.

Well That's Why Hollywood Shouldn't Make Prequals, My Guess is That it was a step mom. Goerge Lucas must have forgotten?
