Why is the film "Pieces of April" billed as such a shocking movie?

I saw this movie and don't get me wrong- I enjoyed it. What is so shocking about it? Is it that the family doesn't want to really go to April's house for thanksgiving and would rather live in their delusional family denial? Please, someone clue me in...

This movie deals with so many sociological barriers. The bi-racial relationship, the crazy neighbors, etc.

two words - katie holmes. i think it's her first role out of her goody two shoes persona from dawson's creek and perhaps that's "shocking"
