I need some insights to music in movies.?

So I'm writing a paper about how music affects the mood in a movie, but I only have a paragraph and I really need to stretch it out a bit more. So if anyone can offer me some insights as to how music informs the viewer in the movie or how it is pivotal to the overall feeling and interest of the story, I'd really appreciate it. Also, leave a name if you'd like so that I can cite my sources more accurately. Thank you.

There's a difference between scores for films, which are typically created by a professional director/musician. Scores are used evoke emotion of the scene or set that scene apart from others.



Popular music, when used in a movie in my opnition is done to sell soundtracks, give new artists an opportunity to sell some records or if the music is really good, attract viewers to the movie through the music.

Through Life as people learn and grow they relate certain things i.e. Music to certain moods and situations. Example a uptempo bright piece of music could evoke emotions of Joy, Excitement and a sense of well being Your braind does this by realeasing endorphins that makes you euophoric. On the other hand a piece of music with a hard metalic upbeat temper could cause your brian to release epinephrine a drug that increases your heart rate and gets you "pumped up" making you want to get up and do something or sit "on the edge of your seat".

We combine the imagery we see on the screen with our subconscious interpretation of the music. Corrigan and White (film textbook authors) call this "the value of feeling".



Use the terms diegetic and non-diegetic sounds. Music is an example of non-diegetic sound, and film employs music to effect our concepts of emotion and time and space relationships.
