I wanted to upload a video onto youtube and this is my first time doing it and its taking longer than usual. The file of it is mp4. Is that going to make it slower or does youtube not accept that kind of file?

Really depends on the length, quality of your video, the number of uploads currently being processed on Youtube and the speed of your internet connection.
The videos I usually upload is about 2-4 min, WMV format, and it takes from 10 to even 30 min, depending on the said above.

It depends. On the YouTube user page, it says that it takes 1-5 minutes per MB (Megabyte), but that's not necessarily true. So if your video is like 80-90MB, just go find something else to do because it will take an hour or more. If it's something compressed, like 10-20MB, it'll take 5-10 minutes. Remember that you have a 100MB and/or 10 minute limit. Be careful.

Do you have Windows Movie Maker or something so you can change the format? I upload something to WMM and then publish it so it is the appropriate file type for YouTube which in that case is WMV. I'm not sure what other formats are compatible though.

It depends on the time and length of the movie. Typically about 5 minutes.
