New releases or older films you’ve seen for the first time.

For new releases I'd say 'Your Sister's Sister' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlbKcGn9M1M I was just genuinely surprised at how unconventional and well-made of a rom-com it was. It's hard to come by...

For older films I saw ‘Room With a View' but I don't know why I laughed at DDL so much...http://anninateatime.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/ivory11.jpg?w=640

Anyways how about you guys? :)

Thanks!

Hey Marina :)

I'll def have to check out Your Sister's Sister and Room With A View, they look great!

Anyway, the last movie that blew me away was Idi I Smotri, or Come and See. Really, it's my dream film that instantly became top 5 (yes, its that good). It's subtle, got an operatic feel to it, unapologetic, wise, and the best camerawork I have ever seen. I really do not want to spoil it for anyone, but if you are sick or tired of war films that deny minor aged characters of character development, are more about bravery and plot rather than atmosphere, I highly recommend Idi I Smotri. Spielberg apparently made the cast and crew of Schindler's List watch it. I know you love films such as Requiem For A Dream, etc- films that aren't afraid to punch you in the gut that go into the deeper means of humanity.

This is the time of year where great movies are few and far between. But I did get to catch up on a film that many regarded as one of the best of last year, This Is Not a Film.

Also another one, I guess it’s not a film, but Breaking Bad is the only thing I watched recently that had me screaming at the screen, and just sitting there in awe after it finished. Through the course of the last 3 episodes of Season 4 I don’t think a minute went by when I didn’t think about it. I still cant stop thinking about it, I hope it comes back soon.

hai rebellion

(spoiler alert - sort of)

I only recently watched Good Will Hunting and I suppose you could say it blew me away. I think the story behind the film is almost as good as the story itself, especially when you look at it now and see how huge Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have become. When trying to sell the script, producing companies wanted Damon and Affleck replaced by Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio; who are both beyond reproach, but the film would have been completely different were that allowed to happen.

Thought the film was really feel-good, emotional and fun at the same time, you get really involved with Damon and will him to succeed, which makes the ending really sweet.

Newer films I'd say Inception and maybe even Shutter Island. I like movies that keep you thinking and I thought Inception was fantastic for that, really exciting too and the use of different landscapes I also enjoy. Shutter Island I thought was really really smart, a lot of people didn't like the ending but I was like noooooo, you were doing so well Leo!

I also second Liam's vote for Mysterious Skin, a modern classic, really captivating movie.

@rebellion: OOOOOOH I smell a re-watch!

Senna (2010) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1424432/

* The last film I watched that blew away is a Documentary called Senna. Watching Ayrton Senna rise to the top of the Formula 1 racing world completely sucked me in. This charismatic, handsome young Brazilian man , who was rich and always had a beautiful lady on his elbow, not only was F1’s best driver, He was one the most famous people in the world in the late 80’s into the early 90’s. While at the top he became aware of the dangers of the sport and loudly voiced his opinion on it. But because of his love for racing, he stayed in the game. This eventually resulted in his death. The film is all archive footage and Senna is actually telling his story with his voice from past interviews. No reenactments, which I thought was really neat. I’m not a racing fan and had never heard of him until someone turned me onto this film. But I like a good story. This story is great. And definitely pulled every emotional string inside me. I strongly recommend it.

The last movie that completely blew me away was American Beauty. I have yet to see another movie that compares.

"I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me. But it's hard to stay mad when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once and it's too much. My heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst. And then I remember to relax, and not try to hold on to it. And then it flows through me like rain. And I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life. You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. Don't worry, you will someday".

My Winnipeg

I'm a huge fan of Guy Maddin's short films, so I decided to watch a feature film by him and watched this documentary about his hometown Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was surreal, experimental and pretty humorous. I can say that it's one of the most original films I've seen. When I go to Canada, I will definitely visit this city.

What happened to your tumblr?

Edit: How did it die??? :( I loved your blog.
