Last I heard, the living relatives of Tolkien have given Peter Jackson their blessing in adapting "The Hobbit" to the big screen. In order to do this correctly, they have to get Ian Holm to reprise his Bilbo Baggins role, and they also need Ian McKellen to be Gandalf. Andy Serkis would most definately be back as Gollum
Not only do I think this movie could be done, I think it would be a crime it Jackson didn't finish what he started.

I think the question is backward. The story is far better than most movie scripts today! It's a lively adventure, with less of the viciousness and dark evil that populates Lord of the Rings.
I look forward to seeing Peter Jackson's version. the Rankin Bass animation from the 70's had very nice style (I've seen the art book), but I never saw the actual movie.

The Hobbit is every bit as excellent as the LOTR trilogy, and will make a fine contribution to Peter Jackson's work if they can hash out all the legal intanglements.

I would love to see The Hobbit as a film...as long as Peter Jackson was involved.

I think the books were good and the movies are entertaining but different form the book. I was amazed at the overall graphic depiction of characters in the movies. Pretty cool CG work.

They are making it into a movie soon (a couple years?), releasing it as a prequel to the LOTR trilogy, as soon as some legal issues are worked out. It was an animated movie in the 70s as well.

Umm, I think that people would just think it's a Lord Of The Rings rip off.
