Question:
Why do horror movies tend to have more sequels than other movies?

Don't you think they would have more impact if they were one off's. Thinking, Misery, The Shining, Texas Chainsaw(not the re-make), to me the point of a horror movie is to chill you to the bone, that , these people could /are out there. The concept behind alot of great horror movies, like Elm Street, Hallow'een, Saw, and more recently Hostel, are chiling, but they lose their impact in the sequels, obvioulsly hollywood works on ticket receipts, but must this be at the expense of the movie goer. The best horror i have seen in recent years was Cabin Fever, it had the gore, the humour and the story.

There is no shortage of horror in the world today, why do film makers insist on re-making old films, fair enough giving credit to your influences, but surley they have more imaginative ways to show their respect?

Surely it depends on the movie - there are a couple of great sequels out there - thinking of the evil dead at the moment that take a basic idea to a new level or push a premise a little further - the Saw movies (sorry I liked no. 2). Obviously the majority of sequels are absolute shi#!e made by different directors with no respect for the original in order to cash in on a franchise with minimum of effort. The greatest example of a great sequel to a horror movie to me was Alien and Aliens.

A brilliant reworking of a basic theme pushed to the next level and as Aliens was an action movie it even crossed genres - now theres someone who understood how to make a sequel - cheers Jimmy

P.S. I like Seans take on this one too - yeah!... what he said!

horror movies in general are not hinged as much on story or plot as most movies. essentially they set up a way for people to be killed, and then the people are killed. in this way it isn't very difficult to set up a sequel, because instead of having to really justify the continuation of the story, they can simply re-establish the situation from the previous film and start again; ie, jason comes back to life, more teenagers come to the lake, jason kills them. there also is no need for character development, because the only character who usually survives and continues on into the story is the killer (who's pretty one-dimensional to begin with, most often). also, since most horror movies rely so heavily on formula, they're not very original and have little to make them stand out. therefore, having name recognition going for you from the start is going to ensure that there will be a built-in audience. frankly, it's a pretty stale medium at this point and that's why you not only see so many remakes (name recognition again), but also whenever a truly innovative new horror film comes out, there are immediately 20 copy cats out there.

The reason there's more sequels is because MOST horror movies actually SUCK. To begin with, they're low budget, and when tons of people go see them (why, I have no idea), they make more than they put into the film, so they make another, and another until there's no more money in it. It's just a business. There are rarely any REAL scary movies...

Movies like Shaun of the Dead are example of homage, but the concept of movies continuing on and on is no different than watching your favourite show season after season. Horror movie villians are familiar and fun to watch, we get to know them and their "antics". You say "at the expense of the movie goer", but anyone who understands economics understands the concept of demand and supply.

Halloween does look like a new vision of the film, due to the back story, but I agree, it will play like Texas Chainsaw. Seen it, done it, nothing new or terrifying that we didn't see in the original.

If you were scared once...why not try it again?? It's always about the search for more $$$. I've never seen a high-brow plot for any of these sequel horror movies.

No one would go see Fried Green Tomatoes 2 or Driving Miss Daisy 4 if they would believe me they would have just as many sequels.
