The primary function of a teaser is just to let you know a movie is coming. It might be very short and include nothing but a title. Other times it really is a tease of the movie. It will often contain unfinished effects and may even contain scenes that won't be found in the actual movie.

Contrary to what others have said, there is no set length for a teaser. The teasers for Godzilla (1998) and Disney Car's teaser were both two minutes long; the teaser for Toy Story 3 was 1minute 45 seconds.

A regular trailer - or a theatrical trailer - is usually 2 minutes 30 seconds long and it's more or less a condensed version of the entire movie with the ending left out.

Most of the spots you see on TV are 30-60 second versions of the theatrical trailers.

A theatrical trailer is a trailer that's shown in a theater; it's usually a couple minutes long and they're shown months before TV ads are. More often than not, it gives you more information about the movie but often doesn't give a specific release date (and sometimes not even a rating).

Teaser trailers are shown on TV and websites, and are usually shorter; maybe 30 seconds to a minutes long. I think (but I don't know for sure) that the reason they're called "teasers" is because they're short and 'tease' you with only a teeny bit of information about the movie. However, they almost always contain the specific information of when the movie will be released and the rating.

It's all in the timing and market strategy for the film. For example, Sony-MGM will attach a teaser (less than a minute) of the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace to the July 2nd opening of Hancock. In the fall, the studio will attach a theatrical trailer to whatever their current release is. Then, prior to the film's premiere, there will be a series of TV spots. Warners Brothers has done this with the Dark Knight. Teaser had sound bites and the Batman log, but no footage. Early trailer featured Heath Ledger's Joker. Final trailer adds Aaron Eckhart's Harvey Dent/Two Face plus additional plot points. Hope this helps.

A Teaser shows very little information about the film and is usually used to publicize the film. A Theatrical shows more scenes from the movie and gives a lot more information it is also the main representative of the film and only shown in theaters or on the internet.

Hope this Helps!

Teasers do not explain the plot and are very short. The Cloverfield teaser didn't even have a title. Theatrical trailers are several minutes long, and offer the plot.

length teasers are usually short just to give a brief hint of whats to come, the theatrical trailer is longer and trys to better sell the movie.

and a theaterical is just basic scenes and shows you parts from the movie, its not as intense.
