In the movie, the couple has a huge fight and one of them screams for the other to just be quiet, for silence. At the very end of the movie, there are three scenes about silence. 1) The man turns off his hearing aid, 2) Frank is watching his kids play, but there is no sound, 3) The neighbor asks his wife to stop talking about the Wheelers, and she says okay, and they just stand there quietly.

The whole point of the movie I think, is how people were unhappy with suburban life. Especially the main couple. When he turns down the hearing aid I think that that shows that he is just as unhappy as the main charcters who had planned on moving to France.

The crazy guy doesn't really have a point in my opinion

yehh it just parallels two unhappy couples, showing how both examples are trapped inside suburbia and just unhappy. he's turning down his hearing aid to tune her out because she's annoying and he doesnt care for her babble anymore.. i love that movieee!
