Do you think James Cameron's 1997 Titanic movie box-office record will ever be broken? Is it possible that the record may be broken someday? What was so popular about Titanic anyway? What made the movie a giant success? Since I'm a guy I'm not a fan of Romance movies.

Titanic grossed about $600 million domestically, which is an incredible feat. Titanic benefited from the public seeing it multiple times and from a lengthy theatrical run. The Oscar success definitely helped as well. But the staying power Titanic has is truly the remarkable thing about the record... Titanic only opened up to a $28 million weekend. And then it just continued going strong... it tallied 17 straight weekends at #1 at the box office. That is ridiculous.

As you all know, The Dark Knight grossed about $533 million domestically last year, good enough for second best of all-time. I think we are on the brink of the Titanic record to be broken.

But here's an interesting fact for those who aren't aware... when adjusted for inflation, Titanic is the sixth highest grossing film of all-time. Gone With the Wind is the top grossing film adjusted for inflation with $1.45 billion in ticket sales. Now THERE'S a record that I don't think will ever be broken.

I've always felt Titanic was just another mediocre love story with some outstanding special effects, but I'll admit I'm not a big fan romance on the big screen. As others have said, a lot of factors need to be looked at - inflation, number of theaters the movie is shown in and how long it stays in theaters, etc.

I've also always felt that a very big reason that movie made so much money was the popularity of Leonardo DiCaprio with women. When that movie was still in theaters, I remember reading many stories that mentioned girls going to see Titanic over and over again just to see DiCaprio. Repeat business had a lot to do with the movie's success.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's just another thing to take into consideration. Some people automatically equate "financially successful" with "great movie". I'm not knocking the movie or it's fans. I love the way they showed the sinking. I just wasn't impressed with the rest of it.

As far as surpassing it goes, it'll happen before too long, I think. It just takes a special mix of circumstances to click at once. Something to appeal to more than one demographic at once, like Titanic had romance and action and nailed both of them.

first i'm not sure why either the titanic was such a big hit-it was probably really hyped up. but i think with the way the economy is more people are waiting to rent movies instead of running to watch it on the big screen, so no, unless the economy turns around then there probably won't be anything that will top it.

Inflated, Gone With the Wind is the highest grossing film. Titanic will be passed at some point.

Records are meant to be broken. Give it time. Personally I didn't care for the Titanic movie not sure why it was such a success..

If you take inflation into account Gone With the Wind actually earned more than Titanic. So give it enough time and it'll lose its record too.

Eventually inflation will catch up and anotehr move will gross more in total box office sales.

Will another movie pass it in ticket sales? Well eventually something better will come out, especially since more and more people are being born every day, more poeple = more ticket sales.

Yes, the question is when, and whenever hollywood stops making stupid sequels and remakes.
