Hi, I recommend you try kmplayer below with haali media splitter installed. Gom below is also decent. Kmplayer does not need ffdshow or a codec pack. I use these 2 players when VLC does the same thing to me for certain files. When installing haali splitter below DO NOT enable haali for AVI files or it will crash windows movie maker. Kmplayer is very good once you customise all the settings to your liking. See IMPORTANT INFO below on how to properly UNINSTALL kmplayer. If you need more help add additional details and I will edit this and try to help you.
For example I customise my kmplayer to where you can double click for full screen and double click back. I also make it to where it always opens up in video mode after using playing audio files and closing kmplayer under the skin options. Use the default builtin modern builtin skin also, looks better. Kmplayer is very customisable.
Yes that happens to me on only certain videos with vlc also. Usually on the certain videos that do that to me I use kmplayer or gom. I use vlc for everything else. Kmplayer does not need ffdshow or a codec pack, only thing you may consider adding to kmplayer is haali media splitter and configure it in the kmplayer splitter filter preferances for ogg files, ffdshow is already built into kmplayer.
1. Check and make sure your video acceleration for your video drivers is set to full acceleration, http://pptfaq.com/FAQ00129.htm (This guide covers how to set the hardware acceleration for windows 98 through vista.)
2. Make sure your vlc is up to date. The latest version is much improved and even able to correctly play 3gp and 3g2 files which previous versions wouldn't. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ (Official site for vlc.)
http://haali.su/mkv/ (Haali media splitter, the download is at the top right corner of the page.) You will have to configure this during installation. DO NOT checkmark the avi support for haali or windows movie maker will lockup when trying to save videos.)
When installing kmplayer below be sure to checkmark the winamp plugin support when the installer first comes up.
http://download.pandora.tv/?mode=kmp&tab=1 (Official site for kmplayer_1434 by pandora. Only thing is they haven't updated the site to the latest kmplayer_1439 version.) I actually like 1434 version better than the new one.
http://www.soft82.com/get/download/windows/kmplayer/ (Official latest version of kmplayer_1439, I like the older version better seems like it cuts out alot less when messing with certain controls, could just be my older computer.)

If you go with kmplayer and do not like it. Here is how to PROPERLY UNINSTALL it. Failure to uninstall it this way will leave files associated with it after it's gone.,
Open kmplayer. Right click on it and click on "options", in the popout list click on preferances. To the left at bottom click on association/capture. At top click on second tab over "association". In association click the none button. Then click "apply to system". Close it out and close the player. Now you can simply UNINSTALL it. You can manage file associations here also.

For gom below install haali above and ffdshow tryouts below then configure gom the way below.
http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/ (Download the current official release beta 7) This isn't hard to configure.
http://www.gomlab.com/eng/GMP_Introduction.html (Official site for gom player. This plays most video files, but can play even more with haali above and ffdshow tryouts installed. Kmplayer doesn't need ffdshow tryouts.) DO NOT enable haali for AVI during installation.
Here is how To make gom player ffdshow codec ready. Open gom - Right click on it, then click on preferances. To the left find the "filter" tab and click on it. At the top click on the second tab over "disable filters". In disable filters uncheck ffdshow audio decoder and ffdshow video decoder. Scroll down and also uncheck intervideo audio decoder and intervideo video decoder. Close it out and close the player. Now your gom player will play even more files with ffdshow or a codec pack installed.
open gom - right click - click on preferances - to the left at bottom click on others . You can maintain gom file associations here.
I hope this helps you out. If you need further help add additional details and I will try to help you further.
