Question:
Tristan and Isolde or Romeo and Juliet?

I always LOVED Shakespear, but I never understood why R&J was so popular. I mean, Romeo was in love with another women acouple of days before he met Juliet, and than he fell in love with her before he even got to know her.
Than they go and kill themselves over eachother, which is the only REAL indication that they were truly in love. (either that or they had some serious issues) I didnt really get that feel before that.
Dont get me wrong, I think its a great story...but it wasnt AMAZING like everyone says
(and please keep in mind I studied it for 3 months in my English class)

Anyways, Tristan and Isolde was on HBO and i wasnt going to watch it bc I figured it was probably just some cheap imitation, but i just watched it anyways bc there was nothing else on (and bc I really like James Franco) and I actually really really REALLY loved it. I could feel the love they had for eachother radiating out of my TV, haha.

So what do you think?

ok there is a 60s movie of romeo and juliet that puts baz luhrmanns awful remake to shame [purely cos you CANNOT modernise a classic tale or it loses half its granduer !]

that said i had never read the story of tristan and isolde [and although a shakespeare fan [since reading julius caesar and macbeth at school]

without adding spoilers i did not see that ending coming and was actually affected by it [a rarity for me] ....so in this one i will say i pick tristan and isolde but if you wanna see shakespeares romeo and juliet at its finest i say go and watch the older version [its a cinematic classic]

You should go and see the Wagner opera of Tristan & Isolde.

It's not performed often, but it's an experience that you'll enjoy forever.

Romeo & Juliet is a great play, because it's about forbidden love.

Yes, Romeo gave up one love, but Juliet was his true love.

Never before had there been a tale of unrequited love, but Shakespeare was the first, and everything since has just been a copy.

People say you don't die from a broken heart, but both these stories are showing you that it is.

I have Tristan and Isolde on DVD but I found I lost sympathy for them a fair bit when they begin a physical relationship after she is married to Marke. I personally don't like Rufus Sewell but Marke was a good man and he deserved better than that. That kind of spoilt the movie for me although I did like it. I think I prefer Romeo and Juliet. There's more signs to their love then just killing themselves over each other. The whole story is their struggle to be together despite the feud between their respective families which ultimately fails and destroys them both.
