that are NOT chick flicks (at least not the really cheesy ones with love triangles and shopping and getting the guy of your dreams that you thought was too good for you in the end..)
I really really enjoyed Waitress (2007) and I generally like modern movies about the old days (50s and older..)

Have you seen Water for Elephants? I think you'll love that. I would also highly recommend The Boat that Rocked, especially if you're into classic rock, and Remember Me (that's a romance, and so is Water for Elephants, but they're not 'the really cheesy kind'. R-Patts is actually quite a decent actor. In saying that, if you ever get the chance to see the movie Cosmopolis, do yourself a favour and don't)

Along the romantic genre lines that's not too cheesy, you've also got Australia and my all time classic favourite, Gone With the Wind. Back to Robert, I would also be inclined to recommend Bel Ami, but I haven't seen it yet, so don't quote me :D

Moving away from romance almost entirely you have movies like War Horse and Changeling.

If you're feeling in hardcore romance mood, you could also try some classics. The Billy Piper version of Mansfield Park has better casting, but is a bit more trashy than the Frances O'Connor version, which is a bit more gritty. Both are good in my opinion. The Tom Hardy version of Wuthering Heights is, in my opinion, by far the best I've seen. It touches on the morbid better than the others. Also, that recent adaptation of Jane Eyre wasn't too shabby either. Those are all quite modern movies.

But definitely watch Water for Elephants and The Boat that Rocked. Right up your ally (:

It's just not smart to spend extended time in the dark with someone you don't know really, really well, especially if you're a girl. This is just good sense. And a great way to get the parents worrying, if you do. Particularly if your folks don't know the person very well. Just because you don't see what the problem is does NOT mean other important individuals in your life don't. Face facts. Your folks have been around a lot longer than you, and as such deserve your attentiveness. Learn from them. Things have not changed so much since they were kids that their fears are not warranted. Questioning authority can get you life with unwanted circumstances, like children or death, quite honestly. Trust me, if your parents don't like it, and dad gets MAD, you can bet he's only looking out for and trying to teach you something. Don't ask other people things like this, either, when you can just go to dear old dad for the answer. After all, if you really want to understand, he's the one with the problem, right?

If you do want romantic films that are not 100% cheesy you should try Paper Heart, Definitely Maybe, That Thing You Do, Easy A and (500) Days of Summer.

Some other films that I love (I'm 15 btw) are 50/50, The Terminal, Rise of The Planet of the Apes, Memento and Empire Records, they aren't the most conventional films but are even better for it.

Flowers of War isn't exactly the brightest of films but it is about the past and is amazing. You may also want to try Schindlers List and That Thing You is based in the 60s if you want to give that a try (it is one of my favourite films).
