Is it just a load of special effects?

Fat suits and camera angles, special effects for long shots.

Notice how everytime he looks so big, the camera is practicaly looking UP at him?
for the rest, thats easy.
raised platforms in the ground, lowered ground for the other actors.
same way they did Brandon Frasier for "Bedazzled" and the baskettball player.
Also sometimes while the two people look side by side they might be 5-6 feet away.
Same ways they did the guy who played the dwarf in "Lord of the Rings" he's very tall too

its the same technology they used in lord of the rings to make the hobbits look tiny. but in harry potter that guy who plays haggrid is really huge anyway. its all camera perspective and appleboxes and then special effects. i think thats what they said in the dvd extras.

pretty much. Robbie is about the same size as Pierce Brosnan when he came out in 2 of the James Bond movies.

They had two Hagrids. One was 6'1" and one was 6"10'.
