Tis a question I have always wondered and now my English class are studying Harry Potter. This question came up and the first person to arrive with an answer with proof gets extra credit. I wouldn't mind that. Cheers guys.

No. look at Mr Filch, both parents Witch and Wizard and yet he is a squib, and Mrs Figg *we do not know if she had two magical parents but this is assumed.

If you also remember Mr Filch had a guide to squibs on how to use magic. But even with that book he couldn't do magic.

If you remember Neville Longbottom, eager to find his magical ability early...they tried ever so hard to find a magical trait in him believing him to be squib, but eventually discovered him not to be a Squib when his Uncle 'accidentally' dropped him out of a window and he bounced down the road.

Squibs however share some things with wizards and witches however:

They are aware of and understand the wizarding world.

They also can see Hogwarts, which ordinary Muggles cannot.

Also, Mrs Figg, said at the trial of Harry Potter she could see the Dementors and explained what they looked like. This was a lie as she and Dumbledore did not trust Cornelius Fudge's to be fair in Harry's trial. Also According to J.K.Rowling, Squibs are incapable of seeing Dementors.

In the wizarding world it is often considered embarrassing to have a squib in the family.

It is all down to genetic traits. Whilst it rare for two magical parents to have a non magical child it does happen. Similar to if both your parents had brown eyes and you have blue eyes. Maybe your Nan or Great Nan had blue eyes for example or If you could back in time you would find one of your ancestors had blues eyes.

Well. I can't believe I'm spending energy on doing this, but here goes...

* We assume that genetics decide whether any given child is magically active, so to speak.

(If it is down to magic, then it's down to magic, and there you go.)

* There is evidence that two Muggles can get a magically active child, but that it is rare. This indicates that the trait is recessive.

* There is evidence that there were people called "Squibs". A Squib is someone who was born into a wizarding family but hasn’t got any magic powers. Kind of the opposite of Muggle-born wizards, but Squibs are quite unusual.

So it seems that not only is magic recessive, it doesn't necessarily have to express either.

So there's your proof.

Yes, usually after years of magical blood, one odd child without magic can be born to magical parents. They are known as Squibs. They are usually shunned and kept in the quite because it is seen as a shame to the family. The squibs are also ashamed of themselves too and go on to live among muggles.

Argus Fitch, Mrs. Fig and one of Ron's cousin (who is an accountant) are Squibs.

Again after generations of living among muggles in secrecy, the knowledge of wizardry is lost and in later generations, the power is awakened.

It is said that all muggle born witches and wizards once had a squib ancestor because it is impossible that muggles obtain magical powers on their own. But this knowledge in not widely known.

In the books a child whose parents are a witch and a wizard but who doesn't have any magical ability themselves is called a Squib. Neville Longbottom says he is 'practically a Squib' because he's useless in all his classes at Hogwarts. But this is quite rare. Occasionally magical parents produce non-magical children, and occasionally Muggle parents produce magical children, like Hermione.

Yes, a wizard and a witch can have a child without magic abilities, they're called Squibs.

Spoiler Alert: Dumbledore (pureblood) had a younger sister who came out without magical powers, you find out in Deathly Hollows.

And Mr. Filnch, from Hogwarts is also a Squib.

No they can't. If a wizard and a muggle have a child then that child would be a half blood e.g Harry's mother was a muggle and Harry's dad was a witch. Also Seamas Finnegan's Moms a witch and his Dad is a muggle.

It could be a squib, like Argus Filch.
