Has the world changed?

Perhaps, but from a movie...don't think so.

In 1998, science fiction author Thomas M. Disch wrote a book called The Dreams Our Stuff is Made Of which chronicled how science fiction books and movies predicted a lot of the technological advancements we have today.

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Science fiction, as opposed to science fantasy, has to be grounded in science, at least to a certain degree. What made all those space age weapons and doodads so intriguing was that they could possibly exist, perhaps not at the moment, but eventually.

How William Shatner Changed the World, which debuted last night on the History Channel, is a two-hour documentary which really has to do with Star Trek and not William Shatner, but hey, whatever. Like Disch's book, the show looks into how the science and inventions used in Star Trek were the inspiration for things we all use today, like cell phones and short-range missiles. Well, cell phones anyway.

The two hour running time seemed a bit too long, and it's difficult to know who exactly the show was made for. Avid trekkies already know Star Trek was steeped in real science, so the show didn't really offer them anything new. The solution seemed to be making the show about William Shatner, who served as a self-deprecating narrator, mocking the role he'll never be able to escape. My thoughts on the documentary are that it was very interesting, and very way too long. I won't say avoid it when it airs again this Thursday, but it might be better to record it and skip through the boring parts

Battleship Potemkin - Eisenstein's indictment of the Russian military and governmental establishment

The Jazz Singer - ushered in talking pictures in a grand scale

The Godfather - didn't change the whole world, just the underworld, where for 3 decades, real-life gangsters tried to emulate those portrayed in the movie

I liked "The Patriot", that movie made me realize what a hard time the US was having with the British gaining free speech, free media, free anything, as long as you worked for it.

Now, it seems you just need to hop the border and put all the blame on the US government,,,,,,I wish I was an immigrant, now......lol

I could have free babies, just put the tab on medicare, other rich people pay into that, yes?.....lol,,,,I do, I am not rich, I pay into taxes, some of that goes to medicare, that helps illegal immigrants have free babies here in the US, only to citizenise those that had the babies.

Bill Gates might be a pioneer, but I think the credit should go to the Illegals that come here and scam the system of wellfare and medicare. Good job, even though it isn't difficult with sympathy from marchers and protesters, etc.....lol

Jurassic Park - made scientists at the museum of natural history change the way they thought t-rex stood

V for Vendetta/Dr Strangelove - explores the consequences of an all-too-powerful government

All Quiet on the Western Front - first movie that depicted the horrors of war, even though it depicted the horrors that our enemies experienced, it showed that we're all human

Hotel Rowanda - enough said

Pulp Fiction/Scarface - in their attempt to show the evils of crime and disregard for human life, it actually glorified it...whops lol

Godfather II - shows that its all about the family, shows another side of the american dream, expresses the full spectrum of emotion

Clerks - shows that if your really good, you can get rich and famous by making a black and white movie that depicts degenerates in all their glory....snoogins

This is just example of movies that will changed the world.

She cites "Spoils of War," which helped several families search out relatives who had "disappeared" during Argentina's "dirty war"

However it may be modern and some people may disagree, the Matrix is a movie that had a terrific point that all of humanity can associate with.

Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" showed the madness of nuclear war close up. It made it real.

"The Exorcist" drove people into church!

"Alien" made sci - fi and space aliens real.

"Casablanca" showed the pain of passion.

"Dead Man Walking" showed the reality of capital punishment.

"The 10 Commandments" made the Bible real.

"Gandi" showed how one peaceful, resolute man changed the world.

"The Godfather" showed criminals as humans and beasts.
