Question:
Why is it so much more popular to own DVDs than it ever was to own VHS movies?

I don't think it's because of the higher picture/sound quality of DVDs. Before DVDs existed, VHS was the highest quality available. I don't think people refrained from buying them because they were waiting for some other technology years in the future.

DVDs last longer the VHS and also special features allow more editions. Lastly they just take up a lot less room

I would say because of the extra features on the DVDs. It is easier to navigate with Scene Selections and things like that. You don't have to just fast forward through the thing. VHS's seem to be falling out now. I don't see why though. You can't scratch a VHS like you scratch a DVD. You know? Anyways, this is just my opinion!

It's so much more popular because a lot more people own DVDs than there are VHS.

I remember the time when VHS was huge, I was a kid then and I'd still love to see one of them but VHS tape players are just not as common anymore.

Much like the war now between HD DVD and Blu-ray, Beta and VHS fought a short-lived battle. Although Beta has a superior picture quality to VHS, VHS won because its players were cheaper to manufacture. Now to your question, why more people collect DVDs than ever did VHS tapes; I think there are two main reasons: price and space. DVDs are much cheaper, on average, than VHS tapes were--especially new releases, with some new VHS tapes going for upwards of $80.00 (thank you Blockbuster). I can store twice as many DVDs on the same shelf I used to store my VHS tapes.

because dvds are more transportable. i mean, when vhs was around, u had to have a tv to watch it, which meant you had to be at home. with dvds, u can watch them on a laptop anytime or even rip the movie and put it on a portable device like an ipod. also, u can see things you didn't see in the theater like added or alternate endings, special features, deleted scenes, interviews with the cast, and other things. also dvds can be made to play in other languages or have subtitles, for those who do not speak the language of the original movie.

I'd say for me it's about the extra features. I actually owned a lot of vhs tapes though.
