WHY, didn't Russell Crowe win an Academy Award in 2001 for his role in "A Beautiful Mind"?

"Beautiful Mind" was a good movie. The directors won an AA; even Jennifer Connelly won for Best Supporting Actress. But Russell Crowe didn't win for Best Actor. He was really impressive in that movie. And if he didn't win that year who did?

Well, it is down to the Academy voters as to who won or not. That year Denzel Washington won for Training Day. Russell Crowe didn't win because the academy gave Denzel the Oscar nod--not because he was the best actor that year, which in my opinion he wasn't--but for the reason that he was long overdue for the leading man prize. He had previously only won a Supporting Oscar for Glory. He was nominated a lot and passed up a lot---so the academy gave him his due--more for the body of his work rather than for that singular performance--again, in my opinion. The academy did the same thing for Paul Newman--his win for The Color of Money really wasn't the best performance that year either, but he had been passed up so many times, he was overdue as well. Plus also, that was the same year that Hallie Barry won for Monster's Ball, so it was a pretty big deal that 2 African American actors won the big acting prize that night.

Denzel Washington should have won the Academy Award for The Hurricane and Russell Crowe for The Insider (his acting in Gladiator was a laugh as was Washington's in Training Day)....

In answer to your question: Denzel Washington won that year for "Training Day". And Russell Crowe didn't win because he didn't get enough votes.

Two reasons. Because, you are wrong, that movie actually wasn't that good. And because there is nothing impressive at all about Russell Crowe, except he can throw cell phones at people. Everyone else in that category deserved it more than he did.

I think is unfair for the Academy to award an actor just because it was "over due." The vote should be based on that specific performance for the year. Not about previous movies or personal relationships. There are so many actors, to my opinion, that missed their chance because of this injustice. Just sayin'.

I hope to god you're kidding. The acting is horrendous, take Kristen Stewart for example: her only three facial expressions are constipated, high and awkward. I don't know what the **** is wrong with people today. Back in the 60s young people fought for causes that made a difference, now they fight over retarded fictional characters.

i agree with sidnee marie..... denzel got the oscar because it was long overdue.... he should have got it for 'philadelphia'....
i remember reading somewhere about something julia roberts said ''a world in which i have an oscar and denzel doesnt have one, isn't right"
