Question:
Is it weird that I like watching older movies?
2014-10-21 21:09:41 UTC
I'm really into movies from the 70s 80s and 90s but I hear a lot of people say how most of those movies are "outdated" and "not watched anymore". I'm debating whether or not if I should still watch them or not after hearing that... I'm 15 so I never even got to experience those decades for film so I want to watchs many as I can from those times. Ever since my cousin recommend One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi Driver, and The Shining to me, I've been hooked on movies from those era's. I'm really glad he introduced me to those movies because they didn't really interest me until I actually watched them. But anyways, I feel weird even liking them because most people I talk to have zero interest in anything that was made before their time.

I watch old movies all the time. From the 20's on up. I enjoy them all, even a bunch of old silent movies. The thing I find fascinating about the really old movies is that there were very few "special effects" and most scenes had to be rehearsed and calculated to avoid injury. Keep watching and enjoying the older movies as it sure can't hurt you. By the way, I'm in my 60's and admire you for your taste.

Some of the best movies were created in the 80's and 90's whoever told you this is a idiot. For Instance the Jaws Franchise, Friday the 13th franchise, Nightmare on Elm street franchise, The Godfather series, ET, and of course all the Stephen King movies made back than. I used horror as we are close to Halloween. But you also have great movies like Bloodsport, Kick Boxer, Karate Kid franchise not the new one, Close Encounters of the Third Kind Spielberg was huge in the 80's search for his movies made in the 80's massive; and of course do not forget the original Star Wars franchise not the new crap they made was created in the early 80's.

Not weird at all it shows you have some taste and you also start to see that a lot of movies made today are simply remakes of original cult classics like Carrie, Fright Night, or Total Recall for instance.

All your old and aged stars like Stallone,Schwarzenegger, Anthony Hopkins, and Sean Connery made their treasure trove of films back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

That's the way most young people are, most people are going to be so bored by the idea of old movies that it takes decades for them to get around to watching Dr. Strangelove. Which is amazing, by the way, and I should have listened to my film nerd friends in high school and watched it sooner, but I never believed such an old movie could be clever, and subversive, and coy. I was wrong, it's damn brilliant.

When people say it's a classic, they tend to have a reason for it, and seeing older movies makes you a lot wiser about modern movies. We all tend to think that it's our generation's stuff that's the most innovative, and easily overlook the amazing things that were done before out time. The more we delve into past art, the more obvious all the influences in today's art is, and the higher our standards get for good art.

By the way, you obviously like Stanley Kubrick, go ahead and watch all his stuff. Lolita, A Clockwork Orange, 2001, seriously he didn't really make movies that weren't worth watching. I'm not just saying that because I feel guilty about Dr. Strangelove.

70's and 80's movies were very good. 90's not so much. Any Dirty Harry movie is great. I watch older movies all the time. Look up Film noir movies. Anything with Humphrey Bogart.

Just an FYI, if you watch the old I love lucy tv shows, all current comedy tv shows are copied directly from the show.

You have great taste in films. The 70s, 80s, and 90s had classics revered to this day. I would recommend some of these movies:

Horror: An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Silence of the Lambs (early 90s), Scream (1996), The Craft (1996)

Comedy: Fast Times at Ridgmont High, Police Academy (vintage 80s), Mannequin, Ghost Busters, Real Genius, Weird Science (stars Robert Downey Jr as a teen), Neighbors, The Last American Virgin (great 80s music), Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sixteen Candles, Valley Girl, Back to School, Stripes, Office Space (1999)

Action: For Your Eyes Only, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Visionquest, First Blood (the only Vietnam War film to portray the aftermath of Agent Orange), Playing the Game, Point Break (Keanu Reeves & Gary Busey), Lethal Weapon (I-IV), Hackers (teen computer hackers of 1995 starring Angelina Jolie), Rocky I-V

Drama: Pretty in Pink (teen drama about HS cliches and the prom), Platoon, Flashdance, Billy Jack, Over the Edge (1st film by Matt Dillon - real 1970s teens), Saturday Night Fever, Urban Cowboy, A Bridge Too Far, Rudy (early 90s), Pirates of Silicon Valley (late 90s - the rise of Apple Computers and Microsoft in the early days), Saving Private Ryan, Breakfast Club (1984), Stand and Deliver (1988), Raging Bull (1980), La Bamba (1987), The Buddy Holly Story

Science Fiction: Blade Runner, Star Wars Series (IV-VII), ET, West World (1st sci fi film to show a computer virus), Close Encounters of 3rd Kind, Fire in the Sky, Terminator, Robocop I-III, Jurassic Park (I-II), Alien Trilogy (Prometheus is a modern prequel to this), The Thing (Kurt Russell), Escape from New York (1981), Escape from LA (1996)

There are many others. This 80s scene reminds me of HS as an 80s teen - lol. We used to workout to the theme from "Rocky." I remember when I was 15 in 1984 during wrestling practice I had four teen girls chase me around the course wanting to hook up. I just kept running. The 80s had crazy moments - fun teen times.

A good movie is an art work. Is Rembrandt or Monet ever outdated. Things that are outdated are fashions and fads and even some of those make a comeback. There are movies from the 30s and 40s that are great movies because they rise to the level of an art work. You can watch those free on Turner Classic Movies if you have cable and also learn about the history of Hollywood movie making.

That's the beauty of it though! You enjoy things that one day someone is gonna be able to hold a good solid conversation with you about these things. It's pretty neat you like all that and it isnt even your time. I can relate somewhat! Keep liking what you like. It's unique, not trendy and makes for a great convo! And to answer your question....NO! haha

Not at all..........if you learn to appreciate the art of film making, then there are gems and klunkers from EVERY era. Not every film goes on to be a classic, or even a cult classic, (because it's soooooooooo BAD....)-------some just sort of fall in the middle and are totally forgettable.

But in every decade, I assure you......there are well made films Worth watching......

Charlie Chaplin shorts.........Marx Brothers films, Cary Grant screwball comedies, sweeping classics like Gone With the Wind.........even 70's movies, like Bullit, and Serpico, were excellent.

The Godfather.......Star Wars, .....every decade has classics.

I love "old" movies too. It's the modern ones that really bother me. Where is the variety there used to be in movies?
