Question:
What is the difference between a "prop" and "set dressing" in film terms?

In film terms, on a set, there are props, and then there is set dressing. What is the difference?

Is a prop an object or item that is toucher by a character? Meaning set dressing is stuff that isn't? What about a table that a number of people are standing around, but it is not touched... is this a prop, or set dressing?

Thanks!

Props are used to act with, set dressings are not... but they can also be mentioned like: "Oh Margret, your drapes are so lovely" and "Margret" can touch the drapes and talk about how she got them, but they are still set dressings. Additionally, if at some point "Margret" wraps herself in the drapes and dances around town with them, they become props. I hope that helped :S

My friend, I'm French-Colombian and the problem is: The ********** American media, thinks Latino is a race, there are many races within the latinos. a Latino is any person who speaks any Romance language (you know French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian etc.) I'm French-Colombian, a Parisien of Bordelais (from Bordeaux) blood, and Colombian (so Aragonese, and Salamanquesa) blood. Now, a White person is a "race". For example: What's an anglo? Is any person who speaks English, but they can have MAAAAANY races, such as African-American, Irish-Canadian, etc. Or even in your country, with the immigration. I join your group, I'm red-haired. ^^ Latino is not a race, is an ETHNO-LINGUISTIC categorization based on the language, and White is a "race" (I prefer the term Caucasian)

I have no clue and still don't understand this. Most people from Latin America are white or mixed with white mostly mestizos, so I don't understand why the term Latino is used as a racial category/term. Latin America was colonized the same way the United states was except you replace the English with Spaniards and Portuguese. Most Latinos I have met tend to be more brown but they are not all brown, tan with dark eyes. I have met some light haired/eyed Latinos that you wouldn't know were until they opened their mouth and started speaking Spanish.

"Prop" is short for "Property" meaning an actor is going to be using it somehow as it is their character's property.

Set dressings are anything that is not really pivotal to the action of the scene but help to make it realistic.

The Brady Bunchs' bathroom was lacking in proper set dressing as it didn't have a toilet. However it had plenty of props such as hairbrushes and toothbrushes for the characters to use.
