What horror movie is this?

I believe it was from the late 70's or early 80's. There were a few short films as part of a larger package I think. The one that I remember but cannot name is about a creature that somehow lived in a wooden crate under a staircase (I think) in the dark for years and years. Then one day a couple of people opened it and the creature came out and slashed them up, killing them. Ultimately, someone figured out how to get the thing back in the crate, then tied chains around it and threw it over a cliff into the water below. Can you tell me what movie this was? Summary:
