Would I understand Pirates of the Caribbean 4 if I haven't seen the first 3?

Ok so my friends are going to watch Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and they invited me, and I've never seen Pirates of the Caribbean 1, 2, or 3, so would I still understand 4? Is it like a sequel or a seperate movie? And if it's a sequel, could you tell me what I need to know my any chance?

Well overall, no you don't need to see the first movies to understand this one. This movie is set after the first three happened and doesn't follow the same plot line as the others. But watching the first three will make this one a little less confusing. So here is what you need to know. Jack Sparrow (in the first movie) loses his ship, the Black Pearl, to his first mate Barbarossa. Barbarossa leaves Jack stranded on an island with only one bullet in his gun. To "kill yourself before you die of starvation." Jack "mysteriously" makes it off the island, and so starts the beginning of the movies. Throughout the movies Jack and Barbarossa are enemies or allies depending on the circumstances. Another main character is Joshua Gibbs, Jacks other first mate after Barbarossa committed mutiny. Gibbs and Jack are always jesting with each other but in the end are close like brothers. All the men I have mentioned before cherish the Black Pearl with there life. Also Jacks compass doesn't point north, instead it points to what your heart most desires. Last point, at the end of the third movie there is a scene were you see Barbarossa (having again stolen the Black Pearl from Jack) showing to his crew a map of the mysterious Fountain of Youth, only to figure out Jack had cut it out before his ship was taken. You see Jack in a little dingy with the map and his compass in hand. Hope I helped! Enjoy the 4th movie it is great!

There's no problem. All you got to know is that the main character= Jack Sparrow is as crazy as a walnut and that he is a pirate with all the words. Half the times you don't know if he is actually crazy or if he knows what he's doing. He is really funny, and as the other main character from 1,2 and 3 wont be in this film, there will be new characters that will be introduced now.So you will be fine. Yes you would without a doubt understand it. It has new characters and it is a completely different story from the other 3. It was easy to understand and even my mom and dad saw it who never saw the other ones and they said that they understood it completely. It is such a great movie and I totally reccommend it!

What you have to know: gibbs is Captain Jack Sparrows first mate

@the end of the last movie, Captain Jack posessed a map to the fountain of youth

@ the end Captain Jack lost the Black Pearl again so he has to get it back

Barbossa used to be Captain Jacks first mate until he mutinied, now they are constantly at odds for the black pearl.

P.S. Undead cursed monkey= totally normal =)

*BONUS* Its never Jack or Jack Sparrow or Sparrow or Mr. Sparrow, etc. ITs always CAPTAIN jack sparrow. (theres always a captain somewhere in there)

Well i didn't watch the 3rd one and i didn't see the 2nd and 1st in ages, But when i watched the 4th one i understood most of it... They don't really mention anything about the other films in the 4th so it's okay... By the way... IT'S AMAZING!!! i love Jack sparrow!! haahaa hope i helped :)

its a beast movie, just go watch it, if you need to catch up, go to that link, go to the bottom where it says films, there it gives a summary of the films. you just might not know who the characters are but its a beast movies, enjoy~~
