Question:
Disney's Tangled vs. Frozen? (Spoilers)?
2014-01-07 16:30:58 UTC
Tangled is my all time favorite...frozen was good too but tangled was so heartwarming, the romance and family love was amazing and frozen felt kind of empty to me. the plot was all over the place and you never really get to know anyone but Anna..the music in frozen was amazing I admit but there weren't any super oh my goodness aww heartwarming moments like the boat scene or the reunited with her parents scene in tangled, also no moments as emotional as when Eugene (Flynn) "died". I don't know tangled was so magical and beautiful and frozen is so different although it's funny and I love Elsa and kristoff

I watched both Tangled and Frozen on their opening weekends, and both twice or more already. When I watched Tangled, I thought it was a REALLY good movie and I absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the music, and FLYNN RIDER (gimme Fitzpatrick!) Although I adored that movie, it didn't replace my then favorite Disney movie, The Little Mermaid. I would still pick Ariel over Rapunzel any day. But, when I watched Frozen, it completely changed my world. It's my favorite Disney movie of all time and I'm completely ape-crazy over it! It compelled me to go on a huge tumblr reblogging spree, the soundtrack is all I can listen to for months now, and it comes up in my daily convos. Let me explain why.

1) Tangled had that beautiful love story with Flynn Rider (please, gimme more Fitzpatrick) and I loved it. I'm a romantic, a hopeless romantic. I was slightly disappointed by the randomness of the love story in Frozen, (SPOILER!) Kristoff's romance came out of nowhere. But, I thought the sisterly love more than compensated. I don't know about you, but I have two brothers. I've never seen a sibling relationship portrayed more perfectly on screen. The loneliness you feel when you're apart, the fights you get into, and the unconditional love you feel for each other even after all that. It touched my heart more than any other Disney movie.

And, it definitely culminated in massive waterworks during Do You Wanna Build A Snowman and For The First Time In Forever (reprise). I cried, of course, during Tangled, but it didn't touch me or affect me the way Frozen did. After Frozen, I wanted to go home, hug and kiss my brothers and tell them I love them.

2) The soundtrack was perfect to me. I guess I really enjoyed the return to Broadway style songs rather than the enjoyable, but pop-y songs of Tangled. Casting Idina Menzel was brilliant and the emotions of the songs were expressed perfectly with her and Kristen Bell's talent. I love how this is a true musical (i'm a bit of a theater nerd) and the conversations in the songs touch me every time I hear them. Tangled songs were pretty. And, you're right, I do massive Awws and sighs whenever I hear I See The Light. But, to me, it's more ear candy than the emotional Oomph of Tangled songs. The songs has messages: Loneliness, Delusion, Freedom and I love it, Everyone's a little off but love is what everyone needs, Understanding. It was a beautiful symphony of life lessons that I think is the deepest Disney has gotten.

3) Tangled brought about the first modern, quirky Disney princess and it was GLORIOUS! I fell in love with her awkwardness and hyper activeness. Frozen has the same with the same quirky, awkward, slightly weird Princess Anna (who, by the way, can't tell the difference between being elated and gassy...). It also has the beautiful, graceful, stoic Elsa, who's my favorite Disney Princess/Queen now. Her layers are so deep. There is her playful, loving, sisterly side that's constantly pushed back by her own fear and her parent's loving, but overbearing protection. And then there's her darker side that just wants to be free to do whatever she wants, that doesn't give a sh**. These two sides are constantly at war with her sense of responsibility and her fear for herself. She's so real, it's refreshing. She's not a 2D character like Rapunzel. (And Elsa is pretty da** sassy <3) Sure, Rapunzel is quirky and fun and lovable. But, she also has no goals in life besides seeing pretty lights. She's not tortured until she falls in love with a handsome guy, and then she finally gets the courage to say she wants something more than a life in a tower. She wants to see floating lights, her life was a lie, and the most she learns is that Madame Gothel is a BAD bad person and that's something we all thought was apparent from the beginning. Elsa wants freedom from others and herself, but she also wants love and care that she's afraid to receive in case she hurts someone or is perceived as monster. Frozen's characters are just one step up higher for a Disney movie.

I completely forgot about Anna. I didn't like her that much until I started thinking about her as a farce. She's that deluded, stereotypical princess, dreaming about first love and how everything would be perfect after it. Love is (NOT) an open door. At first, I hated how Disney seemed to have put in another 2D character in a movie that promised so much. Then, I realized Anna is almost like the evolution of a girl into a woman. She learns that family is more important, that true love's kiss doesn't solve anything, and that marrying someone right after they get married is not the smartest thing in the world. Disney finally corrected their years of slightly awkwardly depending Disney princesses (ugh...snow white) and they did it smart and beautifully!

These, plus others I think are too much to put into this already long answer, culminates into what make Frozen just about perfect for me. The only complaint I have for Frozen is the slightly cheesy feeling I got when Anna gave her life for Elsa and then came back to life (I was like, surprising but i'm not really surprised). But, that lasted about a millisecond and is comparable to the awkward feeling I got while watching I Got A Dream in Tangled and wondered why the hell it was relevant (Girl, I know you wanna see them floating lanterns gleam, so can we please get on with it)

But, honestly, TO EACH THEIR OWN. I don't care if you like Tangled more than Frozen. I don't care if Frozen sucked to you. I answered this question because when I read the other answers, I didn't feel like people were doing Frozen justice. If you read through this entire thing, thanks for listening to my not so grammatically correct or eloquent answer. I hope you learn to like Frozen more though! <3 In the meantime, GIVE US ALL MORE FITZPATRICK!

I loved both movies, but I would have to say Tangled was slightly higher on my disney princess movie rankings. I thought the story line of Tangled was much more organized. Nothing really seemed to come out of nowhere and made us go ' where did that come from?' Plus the voice actors for both of the main characters were just PERFECT. Mandy Moore's singing just fit Rapunzel PERFECTLY. The first time I saw Tangled, I immediately went back and listened to all the songs repeatedly and I think I've seen the movie at least 10 times now.

On the other hand, Frozen (although also VERY good), is ranked slightly lower on my favorites scale because of the slightly disorganized storyline. For example, I didn't realize that Kristoff was an orphan until much later in the movie when the trolls sing the song about love (although the troll does say 'i'm gonna keep you' How am I supposed to know that means, he's an orphan and she's going to adopt him?). The part where they capture Elsa was a bit awkward too, it seemed like I was missing some part of the story. I also wish each of the characters were more involved. Of course Disney couldn't do that with so many minor characters... But if you look at Tangled, even the barbarians from the pub comes back at the end to play a huge role. Everyone was VERY crucial to the overall story!

The one thing that REALLY bothered me about Frozen though, was Idina Menzel's voice. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVER her! I've seen all of her performances on broadway and TV, but her voice just seemed a bit old for Elsa (she's only supposed to be 18). Plus, because of the similarity between Elsa and Elphaba, that's all I could think about throughout the entire movie. When Elsa sang 'Let it go', and kept thinking about Elphaba's 'Defying Gravity'. When Elsa and Anna sang the duet, I kept thinking about 'For good'. That's just my opinion though, if you haven't listened to Wicked soundtrack a lot, like me, I'm sure you would be fine with her voice.

I loved Frozen at first, now I like it... Because I realized how incomplete it was. It was so simple. They could have added so much to make it more intricate, and interesting. The plot and idea was amazing, but it wasn't executed as well as it could have been. I love how twisted Frozen is, but I don't thing that was enough. I mean, what if we found out about Elsa's power later? That would have been cool. You see, in Tangled, everything that could've been done, was done, and done beautifully!

Frozen is the top! both Anna and Elsa have great singing voices, and you can see Elsa's back story of the curse at the beginning and during the song, (for the first time in forever reprise). Tangled's back story of Rapunzel didn't make sense and Flynn's back story was quick and boring.

I love love LOVE Frozen!!! But I also love Tangled, The thing is they are two completely different movies. I think it is hard to choose between just one? But I feel like Frozen makes you feel and care more for the characters, like I was upset and felt so bad for Anna during Do you want to build a snowman? And I connected a little more to the characters in frozen as well. But Still they are way to different and way to good to choose a "better" movie. I just love them both equally :)

I haven't seen Frozen yet... But I LOVED Tangled. Even my brothers (11 year old twins) loved it and its a princess movie. Your right, it is a good movie. I've seen some commercials for Frozen and we watched that song of the snowman singing about summer in class and we laughed Hahahaha x)

i liked Tangled much better than Frozen. I thought it was more fun, and I found Rapunzel much more attractive than either of the girls in Frozen. the relationships are more interesting in Tangled too, nothing in Frozen is well developed. Plot all over the place as you say. And the climax of Tangled is much better too, the way Rapunzel and Flynn are both ready to sacrifice themselves to save each other is very moving. Frozen seemed lame by comparison.

I'm a Disney fanatic and I have to say, Frozen is definitely better than Tangled. It's a movie that breaks away from Disney's traditional princess. It isn't the prince that saves the day. It's the sister who saves the day. Frozen has a better soundtrack than Tangled and is also written better than Frozen.

Tangled is the best ... and it's my all time favorite... i love everything about the film.. the voice casts, the songs, and the story... when i first watched frozen, it didn't appeal to me that much.. didn't like the way idina menzel sang "let it go".. i think demi lovato's version was way better..

I think Frozen is way better, considering all the awards it won and being the #1 grossing animation movie of all time in the world

I loved tangled the first time I watched it!

when I saw frozen for the first time I didn't like it that much, I thought it could have been way better, then about a month later I went and saw it again. and again. I have now seen it 14 times in theaters and I will probly make it to twenty. it's my favorite disney movie but the reason why I like it so much is cause me and my girlfriend have been getting high at the movie theatre lol.

also I saw tangled a few days ago and I like frozen better, but tangled is still amazing

I loved Frozen. It only beats out Tangled for one big reason. The voice-acting is completely superior. I could see those voices matching those characters. I was distracted by how disconnected some of the voice acting was in Tangled, namely Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider. Plus, I love the snowy visuals of Frozen.

I actually wrote reviews for both Tangled and Frozen. Personally, I found Tangled to be way better than Frozen on every level.

Songs: Alan Menken is THE MAN. He never fails to disappoint me. My favorites were "When Will My Life Begin" and "Mother Knows Best (Reprise)". Although, I See The Light is a wonderful song, I felt that it was overrated to some extent, but I have to admit, Zachary Levi's singing gets me everytime. Anyways, I couldn't find a single song I didn't like in Tangled. Frozen? I hated "In Summer", "Frozen Heart", and "Fixer Upper". Not to mention, Fixer Upper totally promotes cheating ("Get the fiance out of the way and the whole thing will be fixed"... uhm, what?). Even "Let It Go", I found to be ....just meh. My favorite song in the whole movie was probably "Love is an Open Door". I can't remember the last time I disliked a Disney song and Frozen managed to give me 50% bad songs.

Cast: Elsa looked young and sounded old enough to be Anna's mother. Rapunzel and Anna's voices are both very princess-like, but I think Mandy Moore give Rapunzel's voice that wonderful innocence that her character embodies. As I said before, Zachary Levi has a stunning voice, but I think the biggest shock for me was Donna Murphy's voice. Wow, that woman can sing! Mother Gothel has one of the BEST villainess voices of all time! Besides Anna's voice, the only other person I found to have a really great voice in Frozen was Hans (voiced by Santino Fontana).

Plot: Tangled definitely wins on this one. I can think of maybe one plot hole in Tangled, but Frozen had too many to count! I was actually shocked at the laziness of whoever came up with the plot. Why does Elsa have powers? How does Olaf come to life? Elsa built a snowman at the beginning of the movie and it didn't come to life, so how come the snowman that she builds on top of the mountain does? Why does Prince Hans save Elsa if he wants her dead anyways? What is Kristoff's back story? We see him as a child. It is not evident that he is an orphan, but all of a sudden trolls just adopt him?? What?! Speaking of which, who are the trolls and what is their relationship to the King and Queen? How did they know to go to the trolls for help?

Characters: Rapunzel>Elsa and Anna. Maximus+Pascal>Olaf+Trolls+Sven. Eugene>Kristoff. Mother Gothel>Hans. Okay, let's start with the protagonist. Rapunzel was lovable from beginning to end. She goes through so much character development and is very relatable (unlike Anna, whose clumsiness was exagerrated beyond belief). Anna and Elsa were only bearable when they were kids. Even then, Anna got on my nerves, but when she grows up, she turns into a hormonal, boy-crazy girl. Elsa? She says "You can't marry a man you just met", then later tells Hans to "take care of [her] sister", proving that she didn't even care about Anna and Hans' engagements anyways. She just didn't want to have to throw a wedding in the castle. I think of both Anna and Elsa as being incredibly selfish (Anna is less selfish thought since she does save her sister at the end). Olaf and the trolls were SOOOO annoying. "I don't have a skull... or bones"....Is that supposed to be funny?!?! Meanwhile, the trolls promoted cheating just so Anna and Kristoff would end up together. What? Stay Classy, Frozen. Sven was the best sidekick because unlike the others, HE DIDN'T TALK. Pascal and Maximus were both great! They showed so much emotion without even talking! The love interest? Eugene shows character development. He turns away from his life of crime for love. Cliche? Yes, but the way it's done is absolutely beautiful and believable. Kristoff and Anna were pretty much a weaker ripoff version of Eugene and Rapunzel. Mother Gothel's manipulation of Rapunzel was phenomenal. Even as she's dying, we see Rapunzel's attachment to her when she reaches out to save her. Hans? The worst thing he did was not kiss Anna. The horror. What an evil villain. Even though it was supposed to be a "plot twist", his sideburns gave him up at the beginning of the movie. I saw that coming a mile away.

Disney Elements: Okay, so as a big Disney fan, I found Frozen to be a mockery of Disney. Mocking true love and encouraging cheating are not things that Disney movies do. I'm so sick of people praising Elsa for being the first to say "You can't marry a man you just met". The only princesses who do that are the earlier ones: Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel, and Sleeping Beauty. However, even then, it wasn't someone they "just met" (read the first couple paragraphs of this: https://medium.com/disney-and-animation/7c0bbc7252ef). Also, what's up with being so cynical about true love? Why does the prince have to be a villain? Furthermore, like I said before Anna is so sex-crazy, dating two guys in two days. Apparently getting engaged to Prince Hans in 12 hours is not okay, but ending up with Kristoff ~24 hours (because that's approximately how long their journey lasted) is okay. Lame. Tangled, on the other hand, refined Disney tradition. It didn't make fun of older Disney movies for having princesses that fell in love at first sight, but at the end, Eugene says, "After years and years of asking", he and Rapunzel finally got engaged.

Bottom line: Frozen is just overhyped, but thankfully, people are starting to realize that. When Tangled came out, I didn't get to see it in theaters, but I've seen it 20+ times since; I just rewatched it again yesterday! I watched Frozen in December in theaters expecting it to be as good as Tangled. Boy, was I disappointed! I watched it right after my last final and I can truthfully say, I'd rather have taken another final. I have never been so disappointed in Disney. I haven't rewatched it since. Tangled will always be a Classic in my heart, but I'm just hoping that people will forget about Frozen soon and they'll stop playing "Let It Go" on the radio.
