I watched both Tangled and Frozen on their opening weekends, and both twice or more already. When I watched Tangled, I thought it was a REALLY good movie and I absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the music, and FLYNN RIDER (gimme Fitzpatrick!) Although I adored that movie, it didn't replace my then favorite Disney movie, The Little Mermaid. I would still pick Ariel over Rapunzel any day. But, when I watched Frozen, it completely changed my world. It's my favorite Disney movie of all time and I'm completely ape-crazy over it! It compelled me to go on a huge tumblr reblogging spree, the soundtrack is all I can listen to for months now, and it comes up in my daily convos. Let me explain why.
1) Tangled had that beautiful love story with Flynn Rider (please, gimme more Fitzpatrick) and I loved it. I'm a romantic, a hopeless romantic. I was slightly disappointed by the randomness of the love story in Frozen, (SPOILER!) Kristoff's romance came out of nowhere. But, I thought the sisterly love more than compensated. I don't know about you, but I have two brothers. I've never seen a sibling relationship portrayed more perfectly on screen. The loneliness you feel when you're apart, the fights you get into, and the unconditional love you feel for each other even after all that. It touched my heart more than any other Disney movie.
And, it definitely culminated in massive waterworks during Do You Wanna Build A Snowman and For The First Time In Forever (reprise). I cried, of course, during Tangled, but it didn't touch me or affect me the way Frozen did. After Frozen, I wanted to go home, hug and kiss my brothers and tell them I love them.
2) The soundtrack was perfect to me. I guess I really enjoyed the return to Broadway style songs rather than the enjoyable, but pop-y songs of Tangled. Casting Idina Menzel was brilliant and the emotions of the songs were expressed perfectly with her and Kristen Bell's talent. I love how this is a true musical (i'm a bit of a theater nerd) and the conversations in the songs touch me every time I hear them. Tangled songs were pretty. And, you're right, I do massive Awws and sighs whenever I hear I See The Light. But, to me, it's more ear candy than the emotional Oomph of Tangled songs. The songs has messages: Loneliness, Delusion, Freedom and I love it, Everyone's a little off but love is what everyone needs, Understanding. It was a beautiful symphony of life lessons that I think is the deepest Disney has gotten.
3) Tangled brought about the first modern, quirky Disney princess and it was GLORIOUS! I fell in love with her awkwardness and hyper activeness. Frozen has the same with the same quirky, awkward, slightly weird Princess Anna (who, by the way, can't tell the difference between being elated and gassy...). It also has the beautiful, graceful, stoic Elsa, who's my favorite Disney Princess/Queen now. Her layers are so deep. There is her playful, loving, sisterly side that's constantly pushed back by her own fear and her parent's loving, but overbearing protection. And then there's her darker side that just wants to be free to do whatever she wants, that doesn't give a sh**. These two sides are constantly at war with her sense of responsibility and her fear for herself. She's so real, it's refreshing. She's not a 2D character like Rapunzel. (And Elsa is pretty da** sassy <3) Sure, Rapunzel is quirky and fun and lovable. But, she also has no goals in life besides seeing pretty lights. She's not tortured until she falls in love with a handsome guy, and then she finally gets the courage to say she wants something more than a life in a tower. She wants to see floating lights, her life was a lie, and the most she learns is that Madame Gothel is a BAD bad person and that's something we all thought was apparent from the beginning. Elsa wants freedom from others and herself, but she also wants love and care that she's afraid to receive in case she hurts someone or is perceived as monster. Frozen's characters are just one step up higher for a Disney movie.
I completely forgot about Anna. I didn't like her that much until I started thinking about her as a farce. She's that deluded, stereotypical princess, dreaming about first love and how everything would be perfect after it. Love is (NOT) an open door. At first, I hated how Disney seemed to have put in another 2D character in a movie that promised so much. Then, I realized Anna is almost like the evolution of a girl into a woman. She learns that family is more important, that true love's kiss doesn't solve anything, and that marrying someone right after they get married is not the smartest thing in the world. Disney finally corrected their years of slightly awkwardly depending Disney princesses (ugh...snow white) and they did it smart and beautifully!
These, plus others I think are too much to put into this already long answer, culminates into what make Frozen just about perfect for me. The only complaint I have for Frozen is the slightly cheesy feeling I got when Anna gave her life for Elsa and then came back to life (I was like, surprising but i'm not really surprised). But, that lasted about a millisecond and is comparable to the awkward feeling I got while watching I Got A Dream in Tangled and wondered why the hell it was relevant (Girl, I know you wanna see them floating lanterns gleam, so can we please get on with it)
But, honestly, TO EACH THEIR OWN. I don't care if you like Tangled more than Frozen. I don't care if Frozen sucked to you. I answered this question because when I read the other answers, I didn't feel like people were doing Frozen justice. If you read through this entire thing, thanks for listening to my not so grammatically correct or eloquent answer. I hope you learn to like Frozen more though! <3 In the meantime, GIVE US ALL MORE FITZPATRICK!
