Barber's Adagio for Strings by William Orbit
I heard this song on streaming radio and it reminded me of a movie i saw this past year but I can't think of what movie or maybe tv show it was in. It was a scene where a guy sacrificed himself to save his wife or girlfriend; this particular scene was in slow motion. I was a either a scifi picture or fictional drama. I know very vague but it's been bugging me because usually I can find the movie that the song was in because I love movie score soundtracks. Of course I could be totally off and it could be another type of scene but I know it was in slow motion and it was in a movie I this year on tv or in the theater. Oh, also it could be a movie a couple of years old because I'm a movie fanatic and I remember great movies because they have great soundtracks, that's how I know they are great; by my standards anyways.

Adagio for Strings may be heard on many film and TV soundtracks,[6] including Oliver Stone's Oscar-winning film Platoon, David Lynch's 1980 Oscar-nominated film The Elephant Man and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Oscar-nominated 2001 film Amélie.

I heard this on NPR this afternoon and had exactly the same reaction. After some searching I came up with the following and think this is how I know it so well and why I associate it with devastation. It was performed in 2001 at a ceremony at the World Trade Center to commemorate the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks which was most likely heavily covered in the media. Adagio for Strings was also part of the program of the Last Night of the Proms that year, in contrast to the event's usual atmosphere. Hope this solves your puzzle!

I posed the same question with the same described scene in mind just last week to my family and friends. None of the movies suggested here fit my memory either. I have not seen the beach or the crow. If anybody has other ideas I would love to hear them!

It was used in many films, but the one you're thinking about is The Crow. Strangely, it's not on the listing...
