What's the connection between 'The House of 1000 Corpses' and 'The Devil's Rejects'?

I saw The Devil's Reject's first but i've just discovered (to my surprise) The House of 1000 Corpses which has the exact same characters. So, what's the link? i thought The Devil's Rejects was based on a true story.

The Devil's Rejects is the sequel to House of 1000 Corpses. Both films were written and directed by Rob Zombie. You'll notice that there are some glaring inconsitencies between the two films tho. The whole Dr Satan nonsense was forgotten about for the sequel. I think House of 1000 Corpses was just a fun side project for Rob Zombie when it was made but it was a bit more successful than expected so he decided to try harder with the sequel. Another reason he made a sequel was perhps influenced by the fact that he started dating Sheri Moon who played the female lead in the 1st film. They were married by the time the second film.

Neither movie is based on a true story. Both films were written and directed by Rob Zombie. "House of 1000 Corpses" came out in 2003, and "The Devil's Rejects" was the sequel that came out in 2005. Both films are about the Firefly family.
