Question:
Does movie criticism mean much anymore?
2008-05-16 12:40:44 UTC
I've always been caught up in reviewing movies, even as I usually don't put much stock in what the critics are saying myself. I enjoy reading other's thought-out opinions though. I've always wanted a job in movie reviewing and i've become one of the leading critics on Leesmovieinfo.com but every once and a while I feel like what i'm doing really doesn't matter. What are your thoughts on movie reviews?

Yes it absolutely matters. I go to see movies more and more because I read a good review in a mag or paper. I don't mean the blurbs on the movie ad. I mean a real review-the kind you'll find in Time, Newsweek, Entertainment Weekly, New York, The New Yorker, the New Republic, The Christian Science Monitor, yes I did say The Christian Science Monitor. The New York Times all have good advice for you.

I don't pay attention to the critic reviews that are created by the fancy professional people.

I like reviews from regular people who just took an evening off to relax a bit and watch the movie, and decided to leave a short opinion on it. That's all that really matters to me when I look at reviews before I watch a movie, and that's the only time I actually care about reading them.

Usually if the trailer is awesome and the movie is preceeded by a lot of hype, I will have saved up for it by the time the reviews are releasedm and will go see it anyway. But, yes, I do read reviews and sometimes they do decide ifI go or not.

I also like reading movie reviews of older movies that I've seen, too, just to see what other people thought of it, and the review will help me understand what the movie was like for a movie back when it was released, and I appreciate what movie-reviewers do.

It was meant a prestigious job but not anymore. its only an opinion. you cant say a movie is bad just bcos critics panned it down.diff people have diff tastes. a critic can only comment on the technical aspects and story. the creativity and style is unique for a director. some may like a movie some not. there are many movies which were not rated highly by critics...yet some people may find them interesting. the best case being NO SMOKING.

If you find a good critic than sure.

I always catch the review from my trusted sources before i go on and spend my time at the theatre. I w'd rather watch most average movies on a DVD rather than going to the movie theatre.

I rarely agree with them. They are so subjective. I think for myself, so I need no critic to tell me if a movie is good or not.

They never stop me from seeing a movie if I really want to see it, but it's nice to know other peoples' opinions.
