Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, Jr. KBE (April 16, 1889 – December 25, 1977), better known as Charlie Chaplin, was an English comedy actor. Chaplin became one of the most famous performers as well as a notable director and musician in the early to mid Hollywood cinema era. He is considered to be one of the finest mimes and clowns ever caught on film and has greatly influenced performers in this field.
Chaplin was also one of the most creative and influential personalities in the silent film era. He acted in, directed, scripted, produced, and eventually scored his own films. His working life in entertainment spanned over 65 years, from the Victorian stage and music hall in England as a child performer, almost until his death at the age of eighty-eight. Chaplin's high-profile public and private life encompassed highs and lows with both adulation and controversy.
His principal character was "The Tramp" (known as "Charlot" in France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal and Turkey).

You seem to know more about Charlie Chaplin than the average Y!A person - most people here have no idea of the history of our own country, let alone one of the biggest actors in the silent Black & White era.

Try asking questions that you don't already know the answer to - if you actually find someone with the knowledge to give you a correct answer, you've probably found a scholar of theatre arts, or at least someone who knows some movie trivia.

Most people around Y!A have the intelligence of a schoolkid that plays hookie too much. Expect to be disappointed by many answers, but try to keep a positive...

You never know when or where you might find that golden nugget of knowledge, usually when you least expect it.

Charlie Chaplin is one of the best! I love his films also. You should check out a rarely seen one of his, "The Kid". Wow, what a film! I love the black and white era also, I wish more people would delve back into that era, if only they knew what they were missing. Like someone said above, Turner Classic Movies shows some unforgettable classics. And as for more silent movies, aside from Charlie Chaplin, Lon Chaney gave some great performances--"The Unholy Three", "The Unknown", "Laugh, Clown, Laugh" are just a few. Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd also. And, if you're looking for great B&W film, check out the early performances of actors like Kirk Douglas, Robert Ryan, Ida Lupino, Robert Mitchum, Orson Welles, Bette Davis.... Nearly forgot, Director Alfred Hitchcock's films are not to be missed! Heck, just get TCM. Hope this helps...

"The Kid" was my favorite. Jackie Coogan was amazing in the title role.

But my best experience watching a Chaplin film was "The Gold Rush".

My Dad and I went to the Museum to watch it. They had a piano player who provided the music LIVE just the way they used to have to present the films in theaters in the old days.

It's just not possible to find a Chaplin film/short that wasn't thoroughly entertaining.

I liked "Gold Rush".

Charlie Chaplin was an extreme perfectionist, insisting on shooting scenes over and over again. In "Gold Rush", where they eat their shoes for sustenance, the shoes were actually made out of black licorice. Each of them ate 16 shoes and were supposedly violently ill for days afterwards.
