Why do they keep making DVDs in wide screen only. Do people really like to see those bars?

You lose so much room on your tv. My tv's not big as it is and I can't hardly see it from the couch when it's wide screen. It doesn't make since to me.

widescreen dvds show you the picture as it was in the theater. If you watch fullscreen they chop off the sides to make it fit on the tv. Movie screen rectangular, tv screen squareish. It doesnt fit. find a movie that has both versions on it, and watch to see what they cut out of the full screen version.

Wide screen is great (if you've got a reasonably sized TV) because you see the whole picture. On full-screen versions, it always says "This film has been formatted to fit your TV". Formatting for a fit eliminates 33% of the picture. So even though the bars are a pain, you're really seeing all of what the camera captures. This is especially good in effects movies like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Lord Of The Rings. Hope that helped.
oh, yes!

I have a 27 inch flat tube & I really do prefer wide screen because you get more of the picture literally. The full screen version cuts off part of what is essentially the directors 'vision'. I think watching Neverland in full and widescreen is a perfect example of this. Or even some of the older films now rereleased in wide screen.

But you see more of the picture when the picture is wide screen because that is how the film is shot. Otherwise the sides can be cut off. My tv is a wide screen, I like wide screen DVDs.

Wide screen allows the audience to see the film as the director intended. You see the full film frame side to side and top to bottom. When the picture fills up the entire screen a person may not realize how much information they are actually losing. Essentially the image is "blown up" in order to fit your t.v. screen. Think about it...if you took a 5x7 picture but needed to make it fit in a 3x5 frame you'd have to cut it down. After you cut it up the picture would fit but what part of the image would you end up throwing in the trash??
I do however agree that it is difficult to enjoy a wide screen movie on a small t.v.

Even tho I dont yet have a widescreen TV, eventually I will, so why would I buy full screen now only to have to replace them with widescreen editions later? I really like the movie which have both versions even tho I only watch the widescreen versions.
Widescreen is the director's original vision. Full screen GUARANTEES yuou're going to miss stuff on the screen.

There is a major difference between regular sized movies and wide screen movies. Wide screen movies are truly wider; this allows for more of the action on the far sides of the movie to be displayed.
In a regular size (full screen) the video size is roughly 1 to 1:33 one inch in height per 1.33 in width wide screen is 1:2.35+ meaning that there is one inch of height for about every two and a half in width.

Wide screen used to drive me batty, but full screen versions cut off the sides of the film, so I like action movies in wide screen, otherwise I get the full screen version.

Start getting DVDs w/o widescreen. On some DVDs you can change it to full screen. The widescreen makes it feel more like a movie theater. Fullscreen cut's off some of the sides of the movie.

With movies in full screen, the picture has been butchered and modified to fit your screen, which means that parts of the image have been cropped out. Widescreen is far superior; buy yourself a better TV.

Widescreen is the better size. This is the actual size the movie is shot in. When they reformat it for full screen, they cut off the edges of the movie to fit the screen. Personally, I'd rather see the whole movie, so give me widescreen.

Because you would lose more of the great cinematography of a movie by cutting off the sides, as opposed to the top and bottom of the picture.

You get used to the bars & don't even notice them after awhile.
If you watch a full screen version & then letterbox you will see more with the letterbox.

actually, you gain more picture... when they format it to fullscreen, they cut off the sides.... i love widescreen... plus, its better if you have a widscreen tv, which i dont, but still, i want to see the movie like i remember it in the theatres.... not just half of it with the sides cut off....
