Star Trek XI had several similarities to the motion picture film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and the original series episode "This Side of Paradise." The trouble is that it plagiarizes both episodes but doesn't extrapolate on either. There are time travel elements in the film, but they don't resemble the original series. In the original Star Trek, time travel was achieved by traveling at warp speed around a star. In the new movie it's acheived by something called "red matter," which creates a black hole.
Furthermore, Star Trek XI departs from canon too much to be truly based on canon. Captain Christopher Pike is about ten years older than he should be, the Enterprise is brand new (it should be at least 6 years old at this point in the Star Trek history) and has undergone a shocking redesign, so that it looks more advanced even than later episodes in the franchise, such as the Star Trek motion picture series and the Voyager series. Several people attend Starfleet Academy together despite drastic differences in their ages and the Enterprise leaves space dock on its maiden voyage with a crew full of cadets.
Spock makes out with Uhura and attacks Kirk on the bridge in full view of the crew, things that would never have happened in the original Star Trek series. Kirk is too flaky and hits on Uhura, another thing that would never happen. Also, in the Star Trek canon, Kirk served on board the USS Farragut and the USS Republic prior to becoming captain of the Enterprise. In the new Star Trek movie, he goes from delinquency at Starfleet Academy to first officer and then captain of the Enterprise so fast it'll make your head spin.
