Well, the two characters meet while working as shepherds on Brokeback Mountain (in Montana). There is no "Secret Gay Meaning" to the name....it's just a name of a locale.

Brokeback Mountain is the name of the place the cowboys first met while working as sheep herders. The mountain has that name because the shape of the ridge back takes a dramatic dip in the middle like it was broken in half.

Yes, it is. It is a story of unrequited love. It is very sad. What makes it so sad is not the two people in love but the ones around them who make their life a living hell. THe only place they can find enough space to be who they are meant to be is on Brokeback Mountain, but even there, in the middle of nowhere, people go out of their way to begrudge them the primal thing that we all need, but they can't have.

The steep and bumpy trails that leading up and down Brokeback can break the rider's back.
