Well you can start off by everything Stanley Kubrick and David Lean have ever done. Also Richard Attenborough's Gandhi.

There are so many fantastic movies that I could have made a list of exceedingly great length! Here's a link to Wikipedia's lists of British films; scan a few years, and you'll be amazed at the number of excellent, classic films.

People have mentioned some great films so far, but not many of them are "classics".

What about Brief Encounter? Or Separate Tables?

Or any of Hitchcock's English Films? - The Lady Vanishes or the first version of The Man Who Knew Too Much (The one made in the 30's).

BTW, someone mentioned one of my favorite films - Local Hero. The only problem is that it is way too recent to be a "classic" (I don't consider anything from the 80s old enough for that, and it's not well known enough to be a classic anyway.) But also, it ISN'T English, it was made in Scotland. And in Great Britain, there is a big difference between England and Scotland! But it IS a fantastic movie!!!!
