Question:
Sirius Black?

In 'Prisoner of Azkaban' when Peter Pedigrew escapes thus there was no proof to show that Black was not guilty...

Why couldn't they just give Black some Vereteserum (truth serum) and confirm that Black was not guity. Since you cannot lie no matter what you are asked, as was the case with the fake Moody in 'Goblet of Fire'.???

Actually, Veritaserum isn't completely trustworthy. As Dumbledore often says, the human mind is complex. Snape even notes that you can't just open a head and read the mind like a book.

Anyway, if the person asking the Veritaserum asks the wrong questions, the person being interrogated could give falsely incriminating answers.

Imagine this:

Fudge: "Black, are you responsible for the deaths of James and Lily Potter?"

Sirius on Veritaserum: "Yes. I am responsible."

Giving Sirius Veritaserum could do more harm than good.

He was accused of killing Peter Petigrew. The proof was the Peter was not dead since he had been scabbers all along. What happened was that Peter had killed the 11 muggles by striking with his wand behind his back as a form to frame Sirius Black and then he transformed himself into a rat, he left his finger as his last remainds. Him being there was the proff in itself. The Minister of Magic threw him in Azkaban without even a trial, he wont never have agreed to being proved wrong by giving him truth serum.

Considering Black's past, Harry and co knew that all wizards like Snape wanted to do was to hand Black over to the Dementors. They were not interested in what he had to say, whether it was the truth or not.

I have a feeling that the Ministry is so convinced of a person's guilt, there is no need for it (you could have given it to Hagrid in Chamber of Secrets to learn something)

If they gave Black Vereteserum, then that would be too easy and probably would have cut the story short.

Great question. I love Harry Potter too!!
