Sunshine was a free-spirited young man with long hair, leaning towards the Hippie ethos which espoused love and peace. Gerry made a reference towards him being a fruit cake which was intended to be insulting. By Sunshine's kissing Gerry back the insult was immediately diminished and Gerry was made to look the fool.
Sunshine's character was not gay as others have suggested.

he only did that to prove that he was NOT gay. every one thought he was because he was from California and had the long hair. they just assumed he was gay so he did it as a joke. that was a great movie and based on a true story. loved it!!
