We've all read the hype about The Dark Knight only being given so much praise because Heath Ledger died before it was released, but is this really true? Was he an impressive actor or not? And how many other times has this happened in the past?

Some performances with a lot of hype end up not living up to it. This isn't the case with Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker. It truly is a remarkable performance. He took control of every scene he was in, and he completely owned that character.

The only thing his death did was perhaps cause a little extra interest in the movie. The movie would have had a tremendous amount of interest and a lot of people would have seen it regardless, but it may have created some additional interest. But that doesn't change his performance or how good it was. It really is a memorable and noteworthy performance. I think it is even worthy of a Best Supporting Actor nomination.

No he got praise for it because he was good in it and the Dark Knight was a good movie.

He was good in Brokeback Mountain as well. He was also good in Candy. From what I can see from those movies, he had some talent.

Similar things happened after River Phoenix died, further back James Dean would be the obvious one. Both of them were great actors too Had they not died they would have become even better.

After Brandon Lee died tragically on the set of The Crow there was a massive outpouring of grief, and also lot of tasteless spooky talk about the "Lee Curse" . However I think what was most sad about him is that he never really got the chance to show his full potential, even though The Crow was entertaining enough. I feel he would have probably gone on to something even better

Maybe we would have seen him cast as Neo in the Matrix and become a massive action star. Maybe he would have worked with Jet Li

We'll never know, and that's my point. He never got the chance even though people remember him with fondness and still love The Crow.

At least Heath Ledger succeeded in showing the world what he could do while he was still alive. He was pretty damn near to being at the top of his game.

He was impressive in BrokeBack Mountain - he had a lot of untapped potential and could have been one of the greatest actors of this generation. It's just bad luck that he died before the film - now everyone thinks the performance was only good cos of his death - which is not true. It was incredible - he didn't play the Joker, he was the Joker.

The same thing happened with Brandon Lee and The Crow, but he was killed while filming the movie. Family said it was his best work so decided to release it. Good thing, The Crow is the best movie ever.

No because you have to keep moving them, and like the above poster stated, they smell.
