Question:
Why is there no remake of Gone With The wind?

I am a huge fan of the book and even loved the 1939 movie. Agreed the original movie was awesome, however I feel so many good characters have been left out(Wade, Will, Dilcey etc) due to the length of the novel and time constraint. With the advancement in film making, I feel it can be depicted very well.... Any thoughts?
PS: I have a feeling am going to be attacked with indignant words as to how could I even think of such a thing... well, its just a thought, would love to hear the opinion of others...

I am of the opinion that classic movies should left alone and there should not be any remake of them.

Well, someone who is so far up their own *** they are literally in danger of choking to death on their own face will tell you about how awful all modern film making is and how back in the 'good old days' films where significantly better with more depth and artistic integrity (which is bullsh*t, by the way. Nostalgia makes idiots of us all, I guess), but a more rational person will tell you it could be a number of things. One reason could be copyright issues. This could be literally MILLIONS of things, so there isn't much reason to go into all of what that could entail.

Another popular reason is that producers feel that a newer generation wouldn't want to see Gone With The Wind, which might be true. Not because movie goers suck these days but the movie has already been done, so what does remaking it really do to bring in new people? Most people have already seen the movie and really don't care to see it again.

A third is that just maybe nobody has the balls to bite the bullet. If you remake Gone With the Wind, that is a career defining film you have to make. Sure, their are people who COULD do it well, but considering those people are already in such high demand I doubt they see any point in taking the risk, and no studio wants their name associated with a bad GWTW remake.

It could be a ton of reasons, nobody really knows the answer except for the people who own the rights.

Well, there are many reasons.

1) The film is an absolute classic, the classic of classics. Remaking something this legendary would be like remaking The Wizard of Oz or Casablanca or The Breakfast Club.

2) The acting in the film was outstanding. Also, after seeing GWTW, nobody can envision anyone but Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable playing Rhett and Scarlett. (same goes for all of the other characters). What modern actor would want to be compared to them? Nobody.

3) The 1939 movie is 4 hours long. That's a damn long movie. If you added all of the good characters from the book, it would be even longer. The book is over 1,000 pages! There's no way you can fit in everything from it into a movie of reasonable length. Also, people have shorter attention spans than they did in 1939. Nobody wants to sit through a movie that's over 2 hours.

4) Even with the "advancement in film making", there's no way you can fit everything into the plot quickly. Sure, the effects would be better (they were outstanding in the original, especially for a 1939 film) and the cameras would be crisper, but that's about it.

5) Taking GWTW as a project would be a huge commitment and stress to all of the filmmakers involved. Knowing your picture will be compared to the most popular movie of all time (literally), the highest grossing film of all time (if prices are adjusted for inflation), and what is considered "the most magnificent picture ever", is a lot to carry under your belt. Also, GWTW won 10 Oscars. A little too much to live up to, I would think.

6) David O. Selznick, Margaret Mitchell, Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, and everyone else would be rolling in their graves.

7) Consider the few stars of the movie who are still alive, like Olivia de Havilland (Melanie) and Evelyn Keys (Suellen). How would they feel? Not very thrilled.

8) People now just aren't as interested in GWTW as people were in 1939, when it was literally a national sensation. The governor of Georgia even declared a state holiday for when the movie premiered in Atlanta! The only people who would show up would be over 50, with the occasional teenager (like me. but no matter how good it is, it would never live up to the original in my eyes).

There are so many more reasons - I could write a novel as long as GWTW about why nobody will remake it. But I'll stick to these for now.

Saw the movie probably 40 times, read the book at least 10 times. After 75 years, this movie NEEDs to be remade. 30 years ago I would have said "no". Clark Gable was Rhett yes indeed (although he really wasn't a very good actor but just right for this role) and Viv was the Scarlett of all Scarletts. Melanie was well cast as well but the reluctant Leslie Howard as Ashley was a total miscast. He would gladly admit it too from what I've read.

Many say that this movie has not been remade because it is "racist". That statement makes no sense at all. Who ever said that has never read the book with any understanding at all.

Hollywood, put your big boy pants on, ignore the leftists, do the right thing, and produce a more faithful portrayal of this Pulitzer prize winning book than was technically and artistically possible n 1939

People in the film industry have more respect than to replace a classic film with one of the most celebrated actors of hollywood, Clark Gable and Vivian leigh

its the same reason why they haven't remade any of the classic MGM musicals (well most of them)

Its just disrespectful to replace a classic

appreciate it for what it is, if they do remake it however, it shouldn't be overblown and filled with visual effects

Advancement in filmmaking? There's no way there are movies out there as well made as Gone With the Wind. It's a snoozefest really. Today's movies are just for 14 year old boys. Boring.

It's gone. The book is forever gone with the wind. Haha just kidding. Maybe producers an directors feel like it is too big of a job to do, or maybe they don't think it would make them very much money? You should make it someday! :3
