Question:
The plot for the movie "The Purge" was stolen from me. What should I do?

I was in the middle of writing a novel based on a fictional, futurisitic
America where everyone would be allowed one free murder.
The purpose was to prevent mass killings and expedite the criminal process.
For instance, if a criminal case was taking too long, the Court could just dismiss the case on a purported legal technicality, sign a secret, sealed "Death Warrant" and allow the family members of the victim to kill the defendant.

In my story, each person was allowed only one free murder and they had to register their kill target with the government in advance. No two people were allowed to select the same person.
There were other caveats which I won't waste time divulging here.

Anyway, YES, I know that the creators of the Purge changed my idea just enough so that they might get away with stealing from me. Instead of just murder for instance, the Purge has outright government sanctioned anarchy. Instead of allowing everyone one person, they
allow everyone one night. It's kind of gay how the people from Hollywood who obviously read my story changed it slightly, but just enough to deprive me of any potential benefit of selling
mine.

Any thoughts on what I should do?
Should I try to sue or should I just submit my half-written story to as many agents as possible?
I have electronic proof that I came up the idea as early as January of 2013, by the way.....

I think it would still be a good book. I hate to burst your bubble, but it takes longer than 5 months to make a movie. You had the idea in January of 2013....they had the idea at least 2 years ago. That's how long it typically takes to make a movie.

I'm sure you're not the ONLY PERSON in the whole world to think of this idea. It sucks that this happened to you, but there is really no proof that you can use against your case. It's not like it's their fault that they had the same idea, they didn't read your story then make a movie of it, they had the same Idea and decided to act upon it faster than you could.

why you said the Purge was STOLEN from you?

was your script/novel actually stolen? or you had allow others to read them?? and that very person made it into a film??

why many others (from Hollywood) able to read your still-in-progress novel??

Seemingly it's merely coincidence both had similar plots.

Unless you copyrighted the script there is nothing you can do

If this were true, you wouldn't be whining about it on this forum.
