In the move Lone Survivor, I just watched the trailer for it, the guy gets up in front of his team, obviously he's a new member and they're hazing him a little. They want him to recite their teams chant...

“Been around the world twice,

talked to everyone once.

There ain’t nothing I can’t do,

no sky too high, no sea too rough.

Learned a lot of lessons in my life:

Never shoot a lost caliber man with a small caliber bullet,

Anything in life worth doing is worth overdoing;

Moderation’s for cowards.

I’m a lover, I’m a fighter,

I’m a UDT Navy Seal Diver. “

My question is, what is a Lost Caliber Man, and why wouldn't you shoot him with a small caliber bullet?

Just saw the trailer on youtube and I have been trying to find the poem, or verse or anything for this chant but nothing. I think he says

"NEVER SHOOT A LARGE CALIBER MAN WITH A SMALL CALIBER BULLET"

BUT but like I said I have not found anything on this yet?

It is "large caliber man with a small caliber bullet". You can take it literally and say that a small round will not put down a large man. But what is really being said is behind the words. It is continued in the next line "Anything in life worth doing is worth overdoing". They are simply saying that you should always give every task you are handed all you have and then some. Failure is not an option.

Has anyone heard of the UDT poem,

There s nothing better than swimming out with the current and in with the tide

Or swimming in gin clear waters where no sharks abide

Or setting off explosives with a safe place to hide

Or fighting a war with the odds on your side

How does it end?

A large caliber man with a small caliber bullet. Not lost.

The answer should be obvious.

'NEVER SHOOT A LARGE CALIBER MAN WITH A SMALL CALIBER BULLET'

it means what it says do not shoot a person with large caliber weapon system with a low cal. weapon system. you don wanna shoot a guy having 47 with 7.62mm round with a Remington .22 cal, it a shame to do so, more like a disrespect for enemy. small cal are for cowards or animals( tactically cuz it makes less noise ).

I actually believe that the phrase has less to do with the actual obvious meaning and speaks more directly to showing respect for your enemy. As they are warriors also, you would never choose to wound them but rather give them a respectable death. In reference to "large caliber man" I believe they are referring to their character as a man and fellow warrior fighting for their beliefs and defending the same with their lives and for that they deserve a honorable death.

He is says:

"Never shoot a large caliber man with a small caliber bullet."

And I am sure you understand it now but if you don't I'm pretty sure he just means don't shoot large men with small rounds because it won't put them down.

The movie quote is a rather condensed and cleaned up version of the Ballad of the Frogman.AS you can imagine, being it is a sailors Ballad it is much more, shall we say, colorful and full of sea tales both ashore and afloat.

"Large" Caliber man, not "lost", and because if he is a large caliber man you want him to go down and stay down so you make sure you use the proper equipment to get the job done, and in this sense make sure the bad guy is dead. It goes back to "Moderation's is for cowards...", and "Anything in life worth doing is worth overdoing;" Does that answer your question?

As other's have stated, it's "large", not lost. In addition to the literal meaning, it's the likely sub-text is... use the right tool to do the job correctly; other words, be prepared. Similar to the old saying... "don't bring a knife to a gun fight."
