He demonstrates his purpose to EVE; he scoops up crap and compacts it into a cube. Then he stacks the cube. Then he does it again.

He scavenges spare repair parts for himself from other WALL*E units.

WALL-E's job was to clean up Earth since (in the future) it got polluted.

Wall-E runs around the ship causing some havok but really opening up people's eyes to their surroundings. Eve transports the plant to the captain but the plant is missing. This causes the captain to think that Eve is malfunctioning and sends her off to repair. There, Wall-E causes some more havok and "free's" some of the malfunctioning robots. The plant was stolen by one of the security bots and sent out to space to be destroyed, due to A113 but Wall-E saves it. There is a fight between the captain and the autopilot. The autopilot was told that Earth cannot be habited again but that message was sent 690 years ago or some number like that. Wall-E saves the day by helping put the plant into the system but is "mortally" injured. The ship zooms back to earth and Eve takes Wall-E to his house and repairs him using spare parts. When Wall-E comes back online, he is just another mindless robot until Eve "kisses" him. That is basically the end.

Humans created robots like WALL-E to handle their waste that had become unmanageable for them. They flew away in big fancy spaceships, leaving poor little machines behind to clean up Earth (compressing waste into little cubes) and make it livable again.

And WALL-E is a robot so he doesn't need to worry about surviving :P

Wall-e's job is to clean up earth and this helps him because he can find spare parts to repair himself.

WALL-E is a robot designed for cleaning the waste so the humans can someday return to their planet as it used to be.
