Aishwarya Rai debuted in Mani Ratnam's Tamil language film, IRUVAR with Mohanlal. She played a dual role in the film. She was introduced to Bollywood in the film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya; the film was a poor performer at the box office. However, her third project, a Tamil-language film, Jeans by S. Shankar was a critical success. Thus, she was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award South for Jeans.
Aishwarya then appeared in popular Bollywood films Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Taal (1999). Her performance in the latter was highly acclaimed. She was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in the film. Taal was also commercially successful. She then had a cameo in the hit Mohabbatein(2000). Her role as a rape victim in Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai was appreciated.[4]
In 2002, Rai appeared with superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the lavishly produced Devdas, which was a major box-office success. The film attracted overseas attention as well, receiving a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role. Thereafter, she gained the media's attention abroad for her beauty.
In 2003, Rai was a member of the jury at Cannes, and in 2004, she was chosen by TIME Magazine's Asian Edition as one of Asia's "100 Most Influential People" and in 2003, appeared on the Cover of TIME Magazine . She was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on January 2, 2005 - "The Most Beautiful Face in the World." A month later she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. She was also featured on Oprah's "Women Across the Globe" segment.
In October 2004, a wax figure of Rai became on display in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum. The same month, her first foreign film released: Bride and Prejudice. It was a Hollywood-funded but Bollywood-influenced version of Jane Austen's classic novel, Pride and Prejudice which did well in UK, but flopped in the Inidan market.
She then appeared at the Closing Ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian culture, on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be held in New Delhi. For her one-and-a-half-minute dance performance, Rai was reportedly paid three crore rupees, the equivalent of about US$ 600,000.[5] At the end of the year, she had two releases: Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2. Umrao Jaan was a commercial disaster but it gained Aishwarya positive reviews for her performance. However, her negative role in Dhoom 2, a sequel to the 2004 hit Dhoom brought her great attention as the movie was a hit.
On January 11, 2007, her film Guru, premiered in Toronto. The film was commercially and critically very successful. Her most recent film Provoked, where she played the protagonist, was released in India and the UK. Although the movie was critically acclaimed all over the world, it did commercially well only in the UK.
[edit] Personal life
Aishwarya Rai was born in Mangalore in the state of Karnataka, India to Krishnaraj and Vrinda Rai. A practicing Hindu, Rai has described herself as having "immense faith in God and my friends".[6] When at home she attends the Siddhivinayak Mandir, devoted to Ganesha. In the words of Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya is very "domesticated".[7]
Aishwarya was said to be dating actor Salman Khan, her co-actor from the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam for about year and half from late 1999 to early 2001. She dumped him in 2001, generating substantial amount of press attention. Aishwarya reported Salman Khan to be a psychopath who would try to hurt himself and others. In 2003, she started dating actor, Vivek Oberoi. They broke up in mid 2005 when Ash felt he was using her name to his popularity.
Then in late 2005, gossip columnists started to link her with rising star Abhishek Bachchan, son of Amitabh Bachchan, and her costar in the hit song Kajra Re of film Bunty aur Babli. She always was said to have a liking for him but reportedly fell in love during the shooting of the film Umrao Jaan and they then signed a number of films together. She was frequently seen in public with Bachchan during 2006, fueling rumors of her finally getting engaged and married. On January 14, 2007, Abhishek proposed and Aishwarya accepted and they were engaged to be married. Then on April 20th they were finally married in one of the most spectacularly frenzied marriage events in India.
[edit] Wedding
The run-up as well as the marriage between Rai and Abhishek Bachchan was heavily covered by the media.[8] Ongoing press coverage was also devoted to the fact that Rai is considered to be a "manglik" [9] Some media reports suggested that Rai underwent a number of rituals before the marriage took place in order to remove her status as a "manglik." [10] Abhishek's father, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, denied these reports. [11] Rai and Bachchan married in 20th April 2007 in a private ceremony.[12] But being a high profile wedding in India, the venue - Amitabh Bachchan's home, Prateeksha - was flooded with thousands of fans and media.

His grandfather, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a well-known poet of Urdu and Hindi literature. The original last name of Abhishek's parental family is Srivastav, Bachchan being the pen name used by his grandfather. However, when his father Amitabh entered films, he did so under his father's pen name. He is of Punjabi Sikh heritage from his grandmother Teji's side, while also of Bengali Kulin Brahmin descent from his mother Jaya Bhaduri's side.
Abhishek did his schooling at Jamnabai Narsee School and Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai,. He then went to the United States to complete his education at MIT .
[edit] Career
Though Abhishek began his career in 2000, it was not until 2004 that he rose into prominence.
He made his film debut in J.P.Dutta's Refugee along with Kareena Kapoor in 2000 but the film was not considered a success. In a span of four years, Bachchan went on to do many more movies, without any major box-office successes.
2004 was a good year for him. His performance in Mani Ratnam's Yuva, proved his mettle as an actor.[4] He portrayed the character of Lallan which earned him the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award [5] and many wins at major film award functions [6][7]. The same year, he starred in Dhoom which was his first major hit.[8]. In 2005, he shot to fame with four consecutive hits: Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, Dus and Bluffmaster.[9]. He won his second Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category for Sarkar [10].
His first 2006 release, the multi-starrer Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) was one of the highest grossing films of the year.[11] He was also a part of Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai alongside many other co-stars. His second release Umrao Jaan failed to do well at the box office. His third release Dhoom 2, a sequel to his first hit Dhoom did very well at the box office.[12]
His first release in 2007 was Guru. He has received much acclaim for his performance and the film emerged as his true solo hit.[13]
[edit] Personal life
Abhishek Bachchan was earlier engaged to Karisma Kapoor though the engagement was later called off. Since then, Bachchan had been linked to many of his co-stars but has denied all the rumours. After much speculation concerning their relationship, his engagement to Aishwarya Rai was announced on January 14, 2007 [14]. The announcement was later confirmed by Amitabh Bachchan [15].
On April 20, 2007, Abhishek Bachchan got married to Aishwarya Rai according to Traditional Hindu rites of the South Indian Bunt community, to which his wife belongs. Token North Indian and Bengali ceremonies were also perfomed. [16]. The wedding took place in a private ceremony at the Bachchan residence Prateeksha in Juhu, Mumbai.
