Who is Utant?

Good move, but I don't remember that line. Considering the time period it's set in, it probably refers to U Thant, who was a Burmese diplomat and the third Secretary-General of the United Nations, from 1961 to 1971.

Since the movie "That thing you do" is still showing on TV from time to time, many are likely to ask this question. I just saw it again. At one point character Guy Patterson comments that if the lead singer "is a genius then I am U Thant." When interrupted and asked who U Thant is, Guy starts to explain that "He is the Sec, oh never mind" then goes on to something else. The reference shows Guy to be the more knowledgeable, therefore smarter, band member by comparison to the singer. As U Thant's position of UN Secretary General ran from 1962- 1971 which fits with the show's 1964 timeline.
