Old or new, foreign langauge or English. It doesn't matter. Surprise me and impress me. I will do my best to buy the winning film. BTW I'm happy with all genres. Give a brief description as well. Thanks

Foreign new:

Pan's Labyrinth

In this fairy tale for adults, 10-year-old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) stumbles on a decaying labyrinth guarded by Pan (Doug Jones), an ancient satyr who claims to know her destiny. With a new home, a new stepfather (Sergi Lopez) -- a Fascist officer in the pro-Franco army -- and a new sibling on the way, nothing is familiar to Ofelia in this multiple Oscar-winning tale set in 1944 Spain from director Guillermo del Toro.

Volver

Written and directed by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, this humorous fantasy stars Carmen Maura as Abuela Irene, who revisits her hometown in the La Mancha region -- in spectral form -- to resolve problems she couldn't settle during her life. Abuela's spirit gradually becomes a reassuring presence to her daughters (Penélope Cruz, in an Oscar-nominated performance, and Lola Dueñas) and granddaughter (Yohana Cobo).

English new:

300

Zack Snyder directs this faithful adaptation of Frank Miller's (Sin City) graphic novel about the storied Battle of Thermopylae, a conflict that pitted the ancient Greeks against the Persians in 480 B.C. The film, which blends live-action shots with virtual backgrounds to capture Miller's original vision, co-stars Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, David Wenham, Vincent Regan, Rodrigo Santoro and Dominic West.

Shooter

An expert marksman (Mark Wahlberg) is coaxed out of seclusion by colleagues who need his help in preventing a plot to kill the president. But he soon realizes he's been set up when he's framed for the assassination attempt. Can he elude the law long enough to bring the real culprits to justice? Danny Glover and Michael Peña (World Trade Center) co-star in this political thriller based on a novel by Stephen Hunter.

Foreign (Older):

Run Lola Run

A thrilling post-MTV roller-coaster ride, Run Lola Run is the internationally acclaimed sensation about two star-crossed lovers who have only minutes to change the course of their lives. Time is running out for Lola (Franka Potente): She's just received a frantic phone call from her boyfriend, Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), who has lost a small fortune belonging to his mobster boss. If Lola doesn't replace the money in 20 minutes, Manni will surely suffer severe consequences!

Y tu mama tambien

Director Alfonso Cuaron's Oscar-nominated film was one of the most talked-about films of 2002. Rich teenagers Tenoch (Diego Luna) and Julio (Gael Garcia Bernal) meet the alluring, older Luisa (Maribel Verdu) at a wedding and try to impress her with stories of a road trip to a beautiful, secret beach. Intrigued and desperate to escape, Luisa joins them, beginning an escapade that involves seduction, conflict and the harsh realities of poverty.

English (Older):

American History X

A California neo-Nazi (Oscar-nominee Edward Norton) gets sent to prison for murder and comes out a changed man. But can Norton atone for his sins and prevent his younger brother (Edward Furlong) from following in his hate-filled footsteps? With searing performances and gut-wrenching realism, American History X offers a compelling and anguishing look at racism, family and forgiveness.

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Three convicts (George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson) break out of jail during the 1920s with an eye toward retrieving a cache of hidden money. Along the way, they fast-talk their way out of jams, sidestep alluring riverside sirens and record a hit country song. O Brother is a rollicking romp in the tradition of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's "road" pictures.

English Old (Classics):

Gone with the Wind

Margaret Mitchell's sweeping Civil War saga remains one of the greatest examples of cinematic storytelling. Vivien Leigh's tempestuous Scarlett O'Hara and Clark Gable's handsome rogue Rhett Butler bicker and battle from antebellum plantations to the streets of postwar Atlanta. This special collector's edition features a beautifully restored print and many extras.

The Poseidon Adventure

As the luxury liner Poseidon charts its course on New Year's Eve, disaster strikes when an undersea earthquake causes a titanic tidal wave and capsizes the vessel, leaving just 10 survivors. Led by a no-nonsense reverend (Gene Hackman), the group must maneuver through airshafts, electrical cables and a burning engine room to the boat's hull, which is their lone chance for escape. The film scored an Oscar for Best Song ("The Morning After").

Death on the Nile

A star-studded cast united for this adaptation of Agatha Christie's mystery novel of the same name. Peter Ustinov, Maggie Smith, David Niven, Bette Davis, Mia Farrow and many more grace the screen as Hercule Poirot is needed to solve the murder of a rich heiress on a steamliner cruise down the Nile. Can he find the culprit before they reach port?

The Unsinkable Molly Brown

After surviving a flood as an infant 16 years ago, the buoyant Molly Brown (Debbie Reynolds) sets out to find her way in life. She assures a saloon owner she can sing and play piano in his joint and before long becomes the bride of up-and-comer Johnny Brown (Harve Presnell). After throwing a disastrous mixer for Denver society folks and a few overseas dignitaries, Molly flees to Europe -- only to return on the ill-fated Titanic.

Cool Hand Luke

What we have here is a failure to communicate! Lucas Jackson (Paul Newman) is a man who likes to do things his own way. That leads to a world of hurt when he winds up in a hellish Southern prison camp -- and on the wrong side of a sadistic warden (Strother Martin). George Kennedy won an Oscar as a fellow prisoner who tries to break Luke and then comes to revere him. The stellar cast includes Dennis Hopper, Harry Dean Stanton and Joe Don Baker.

Mainstream Films:

Dr Strangelove;

A Clockwork Orange;

Full Metal Jacket;

Tombstone;

Apocalypse Now;

The Calpepper Cattle Company;

Wild at Heart.

Some of the early Lee Van Cleef/Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns have lasted well are still very entertaining.

I shall add Citizen Kane which I have watched many times in the hope that I will one day understand why it is such a great film.

Many of the Gerard Depardieu films are excellent but I have a bad memory for foreign titles.

PS I must endorse Pulp Fiction - much better than the much hyped Reservoir Dogs.

The original version of The Manchurian Candidate. Like many movies of the time the pacing is slow by today's standards. However, the story is all about character development, and it does a great job of making the viewer really care about what happens to the characters. It's a tragedy, and some of the twists (if you were unaware of them) are shocking. It's a brilliant movie, but you do have to be able to pay attention and focus.

Beautiful Girls-A man returns home to a small town for his high school reunion after his mom dies. The movie is a look at small town life and relationships, with an all-star cast: Matt Dillon, Timothy Hutton, Natalie Portman, Uma Thurman, Michael Rapaport, Lauren Holly, and the BIG one, Rosie.

I'd recommend 21 grams ,it basically is about a car crash and three characters who are connected to it, the story isn't actually told in order, you kind of have to work out how it all fits together, but it does all make sense and comes together very well. it has very good acting (Sean penn,Naomi Watts) and is quite different,original and very clever. The title refers to the idea of the human body losing 21 grams after death(the soul leaving??) and what 21 grams (life) represents.

Other films I'd recommend:

Mystic River

Garden State

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

City Of God

Leaving Las Vegas - stirling performance by Nick Cage - a man who has lost his way and wants to drink himself to death, meets Elizabeth Shuh, a hooker, on the way and they embark on a difficult relationship - 10/10 film

Papillion - Steve McQueen+D Hoffman in a true story about their prison life on Devils Island and they escape plan - 2 magnificent performances.

Sling Blade - written+directed by Billy B Thornton (superb acting) who plays a retarded garden hand who strikes an usual bond with a kid who has crap parents, a hearbreaking tale.

Bad Santa - Billy Bob again in a naughty film about his nasty pastie ways as a "bad santa". Cute fat little buddha like kid helps to change his disgusting ways with some fab characters to add! Laugh a minute film!!!!!!!

My fave is The Great Escape, don't think I need to give a description. My best bit in the film is when they have escaped and are about to board a train, the Germans are looking at their papers and in English say "Good Luck" and an escapee says "thank you". It makes me shiver everytime I watch it.

Hot Fuzz is a favurite of mine.

When top london cop, Pc Nicholas angel (simon pegg) is reassigned to the quiet town of sandford, he troubles with his seemingly crime-free world....and oafish partner Danny (nick frost)

When several grisly accidents rock the village, its not long before Danny's dreams of explosive, high octane, car-chasing, gun fighting all out action become reality,

its time for these small-town cops to hand out big-city justice

I would definitely recommend Hairspray =] ..

I've already been to see it three times!

It is a musical that has just been released in the cinema about a girl who wants to make it big in the Dance World ..

However finds it hard due to racism and her mothers constant nagging =P

Deffo a must see in my opinion =D
