everyone watches movies...people watch more movies than sports....nfl, boxing, nba, etc are way more expensive than a movie ticket.....in th is bad economy people are still willing to pay 8 bucks or whatever to see a movie at the theatre....not saying I want a more expensive movie ticket but in a business point of view couldn't they easily sell 16 dollar tickets?

Sports tickets can be more expensive because if you want to watch a certain game, there's only one place you can go to see it - the stadium it's being played in (other than seeing it on TV of course). When you're the only place that supplies something you are able to charge more for it.

If you want to go see a movie at the cinema, you have a reasonably large choice of different cinema companies to go see the exact same movie.

Because of this competition, all the cinemas need to keep their prices at what is considered a reasonable price to pay.

The cinemas would all need to agree to put up their prices, and there would probably be at least a few that wouldn't do it so that they'd get more customers.

Also, I would not go to the cinema as often as I do if they doubled the price.

no matter how expensive it gets I'm quite ashamed to say that I will pay it to see a good film. I do understand people who get hold of illegal copies to watch because it is getting very expensive, tickets, popcorn, drinks etc. but there are films that need to be seen on big screen to fully experience them and for that reason I will always go to the cinema and for that reason I rarely go and watch comedies. The cost of films are rising as special effects get more and more complex and used more in films, with the most-expensive-film-ever-made records being broken nearly every year and it can be argued this is what the ticket costs are paying for, plus for a better experience at the cinema with larger screen, better sound etc. However, as in any entertainment form, profiteering is abound with mediocre actors being paid extortionate amounts because the industry itself is now of such wealth. People complain about the wage of footballers but at least they have the skill to get into these top clubs to be paid that amount but acting is seen by so many as a get rich quick scheme that so often its the prettiest face rather than the most talented who gets the job. In recent years cinema, much like the hit on record shops after music going digital, has had a slump in ticket sales which is most likely because of the increasing prices and availablility, though illegally, of new films on the internet etc. If, like me, you think its the experience that makes a film, you will pay the price whatever it may be yet for those who simply wish to enjoy a film I think the movie industry needs a serious reform over the realise of new pictures, such as limited release on the internet over the same period of time as shown in the cinema, in order to cover for the falling ticket sales.

If they raise the price at the movies, no one will go. My folks won't go to the movies now thinking that it's already too expensive.
