Why did they call the main character in the 1970's Incredible Hulk T.V. show David Banner, but in the new movie he is Bruce Banner? Which one was he called in the comic books? Why change his name? For Spider Man Peter Parker is always Peter Parker, Superman and Clark Kent are always the same, and Batman was Bruce Wayne in the 1970's show and in the new movies, they never changed their names.

It's because his full name in the comics is Dr. Robert(Bobby) Bruce Banner. Writer Kenneth Johnson saw fit to change the name of the Hulk's comic book alter ego, Dr. (Robert) Bruce Banner, to "Dr. David Banner" for the t.v. series. This change was made, according to Johnson, because he did not want the series to be perceived as a comic book series, so he wanted to change what he felt was a staple of comic books, and Stan Lee's comics in particular, that major characters frequently had alliterative names. Since Bruce is his middle name, it was used as his alliterative name by Stan Lee(using same letter for first and last name ex. Peter Parker, J Jonah Jameson). Even in the animated show, The Marvel Superheroes(1966), He was called Doc Bruce Banner.

Bill Bixby The Incredible Hulk is an American television series based on the Marvel comic book character of the same name. The pilot episodes were a pair of TV movies on the CBS network in 1977; the series soon followed, airing from 1978 to 1982. It starred Bill Bixby as Dr. David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk. The concept was developed for television by Kenneth Johnson. The series still has a fanbase around the world, making it a cult classic. Bill Bixby (born Wilfred Bailey Bixby on January 22, 1934 – November 21, 1993) was an American film and television actor, director and frequent game show panelist. His career spanned over three decades, appearing on stage, in motion pictures and starring in five TV series, such as My Favorite Martian and The Incredible Hulk. hope this helps

Not sure why in the show it was David Banner, but in the original comic books- his name was Dr. Bruce Banner.
